Colorado vs. Utah – October 25
Welcome back to my favorite system play, Fade the Storm. This week, we are fading the living daylights out of the Colorado Buffaloes after they upset then-No. 22 Iowa State 24-17 two Saturdays ago. Now, following their bye week, the Buffaloes hit the road to face a Utah team coming off a tough loss at No. 15 BYU as 4.5-point favorites. This is a brutal spot for Colorado to replicate the success they had against the Cyclones, especially in Salt Lake City against the Utes.
For those new to the system, I live by a simple code: if a school storms the field or court after a win, I fade them in their next game. There is also a companion rule, if a player cries during a postgame interview and it is not the national championship, I fade them too. The emotional highs of college sports can be beautiful, but they always come with a crash.
Back the Utes
I am all over Utah this week. I grabbed the Utes early Sunday morning at -11.5 and still endorse anything below -14. Once it climbs above two touchdowns, it becomes a tougher sell. This feels like a classic get-right game for Utah and a perfect letdown spot for Colorado.
Utah’s 24-21 loss to BYU was misleading. The Utes outgained the Cougars by more than 100 yards, both on the ground and through the air, controlling nearly every statistical category but losing the turnover battle 2-0. If they clean that up, they should win comfortably.
Expecting Colorado to find success against back-to-back top Big 12 defenses is a tall order. Utah is allowing fewer than 17 points and 320 total yards per game, ranking top 25 nationally in both categories. Colorado, meanwhile, averages about 360 yards per game, but that dips closer to 320 on the road, where they have managed only 20 points per game.
Utah is easily the more battle-tested team, having already faced Texas Tech, Arizona State, and BYU. Head coach Kyle Whittingham should have his group focused, disciplined, and ready to roll through a 3-4 Colorado squad that is walking straight into the storm.
Best Bet: Utah -13.5 (-110) odds via BetOnline
