#7 BYU vs. #8 Texas Tech Picks and Predictions: Big 12 Conference Championship Preview

LJ Martin and BYU are huge underdogs against the Red Raiders in Lubbock - BYU Texas Tech Picks

In what might be a foreshadowing of the Big 12 Conference Championship, the No. 7 BYU Cougars take on the No. 8 Texas Tech Red Raiders in Lubbock this weekend. Both teams have eight wins on their resume so far, but the hosts have a conference loss to Arizona State on the road while the Cougars are a perfect 5-0 in Big 12 play. They have yet to taste defeat this season, but are now double digit underdogs on the road against Texas Tech. Let’s dive into our favorite picks and make sense of this matchup.

Can BYU stay perfect on the road against Texas Tech? BYU Texas Tech Picks

Can BYU stay perfect on the road against Texas Tech?

This line is reminding me of Cincinnati and Utah last week. The Utes were favored by double digits at home and it seemed like way too many points for a Bearcats team that was thriving. However they were shutdown and blown out on the road. Initially, it seems as if BYU is catching way too many points, because certainly an undefeated team can keep this game within a couple scores on the road.

However, this Texas Tech offense is extremely potent, and their defense is just as good as well. In my mind, this could be a wake up call for the Cougars, who have already shown they struggle on the road. Against Colorado and Arizona away from home, BYU needed overtime to beat the Wildcats and won both games by a combined nine points. You can’t slow down the Red Raiders, you can only hope to contain them, and I’m not sure the Cougars have the power to do that on the road this weekend.

This could easily be a prequel to the Big 12 Conference Championship, but this game means a little more to the Red Raiders if you ask me. After this, Texas Tech has to play UCF and West Virginia. They could win those games in their sleep. A win against BYU this weekend basically solidifies and 11-1 season and a trip to the conference championship. They have all the motivation on their side.

BYU still has to play TCU and go to Cincinnati, leaving them with some tougher games on the schedule.

Don’t be afraid of the hook. This is a telling line in a game that means more to the hosts.

Texas Tech is incredible on both sides of the football. They rank top five in scoring on offense and defense, scoring over 40 points per game and holding their opponents to just two touchdowns. The Red Raiders are top 12 in yards per game, putting up over 465 total while keeping their foes under 285, and they are top 20 in third down conversion rate, again, on both sides of the football. At home, they will be very tough to beat, and no one has come close in Lubbock or otherwise (besides the Sun Devils).

Now, BYU is a heavy rushing team, running the ball over 57% of the time. But the Red Raiders rank No. 3 in the country in yards allowed per carry, holding their opponents to less than 2.5 yards per touch. The Cougars are also No. 75 in third down conversions on offense, leading me to think they will have tons of trouble moving the chains.

Ultimately, Texas Tech is MUCH better equipped to pick up chunk yardage and score in bunches, which makes me believe they will play very aggressive offensively, daring their visitors to keep up. Red Raiders by two scores.
