College football bowl season kicks off on Saturday as the Boise State Broncos take on the Washington Huskies in the Bucked Up LA Bowl. Both fan bases should have an easy flight to the City of Angels to watch their two teams go head to head at SoFi Stadium. With bowl season comes plenty of opt outs for various reasons, so it’s important to get a good grip on who is actually taking the field before placing our wagers. Let’s find out the situation with both locker rooms and find our favorite picks.

Boise State Broncos vs. Washington Huskies Bucked Up LA Bowl Insights

Maddux Madsen and the Broncos won their third straight Mountain West Championship
The Broncos beat the UNLV Rebels in the Mountain West Championship to win their third straight conference title. Last year, it was enough to get them into the College Football Playoff, but this season, all they got was an invite to the LA Bowl. At least the kids will be able to get out of Boise and see the beach in California. The Broncos went 9-4 during the season and an impressive 8-5 against the spread, going 1-1 as an underdog.
The Huskies of Washington also went 8-4 during the regular season, but that wasn’t enough to compete for a spot in the Big Ten Championship. Their losses were mostly forgivable, I’ll give them a pass for losing to the Buckeyes and Ducks at home, and even to Michigan in the Big House. But their 13-10 loss to Wisconsin…. yikes. The Huskies were just 6-6 against the spread, but 5-2 as more than a touchdown favorite. Will they get it done in Los Angeles this Saturday?

As far as opt outs go, there shouldn’t be any on the Huskies side of things. Head coach Jedd Fisch said he expects everyone to play, including running back Jonah Coleman and wide out Denzel Boston, even though they sat out the season finale. The pair led the Huskies in rushing and receiving yards this season, totaling 26 touchdowns between the two of them.
While there isn’t official word from the Broncos, the guy to keep your eye on is left tackle Kage Casey. He declared for the NFL Draft, but we have not officially heard if he is opting out of this game or not. If he sits, the Broncos could be in trouble protecting Maddux Madsen.

I think we see the difference between the Big Ten and the Mountain West in this game. No disrespect to the Broncos, but this is going to be one of the toughest defenses they have faced all year long. Washington’s defense is top 20 in points per game, yards per rush and yards per pass. They allow just 20.3 points per game, less than 3.5 yards per carry, and only 6.3 yards per attempt to their foes.
Now the Broncos are scoring over 30 points per game and are No. 16 in third down conversions, but those numbers might be inflated. When has Boise State played a top 20 defense this year? Once, against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. What did the Broncos do in that game? They scored just seven points on 315 yards of offense with four total turnovers. It’s worth noting, that game was over two months ago, so it’s REALLY been a while since the Broncos offense was tested.
With Coleman and Boston back in the lineup, as well as Demond Williams leading the charge, the Huskies should have no problem putting up enough points on the board. Boise State ranks No. 114 (bottom 25) in yards per carry allowed. Washington will be able to do whatever they please offensively.
