#22 Auburn vs. #11 Oklahoma Picks and Predictions: Mobile Quarterbacks Show Out in Norman

John Mateer is looking to return this week and lead the Sooners against the Longhorns - Oklahoma Texas Picks

The SEC brings us a top 25 showdown in Norman this Saturday as the Hugh Freeze leads his No. 22 ranked Auburn Tigers to face the No. 11 ranked Oklahoma Sooners and Brent Venables. The biggest story in this match is Auburn quarterback Jackson Arnold as he makes his return to his former school. Arnold transferred from Oklahoma to a different team in the SEC, and now has to come for an unwelcome homecoming. Can he lead the Tigers to this upset? Find out with our favorite picks below.

Editor’s Note: This may be my favorite player prop on the board this weekend, who cares if it’s a two man parlay?

#22 Auburn Tigers vs. #11 Oklahoma Sooners NCAA Football Insights

Jackson Arnold comes home to Norman this weekend - Auburn Oklahoma Picks

Jackson Arnold comes home to Norman this weekend

Both teams are 3-0 coming into this SEC matchup. Auburn opened up the season by beating the Baylor Bears in Waco with the entire world watching on a Friday night, and followed it up by handling Ball State and South Alabama at home. The Tigers have already proven they can win on the road, but doing so against a top 15 team is a little different than facing Baylor. Plus, Jackson Arnold makes his return so there’s no telling how this will go.

As for Oklahoma, the No. 1 overall transfer John Mateer has shown out so far. The Sooners are 3-0, already beat No. 15 Michigan when they came to town, and are now looking to start off hot in conference play. Oklahoma’s defense has allowed just one touchdown all season, and it was a 75 yard rush by Justice Haynes to start the second half. The Sooners were caught sleeping that one time, but other than that, they have been just fine.

But the SEC is different. Jackson Arnold is the most hated man in Norman this weekend, and the Sooners will be looking to show him the grass ain’t always greener somewhere else, even if the money is.

When I looked deeper into this contest, I realized I wasn’t paying much attention to either team’s cupcake wins. I’m more focused on what they did against a tougher opponent. Does Michigan really compare to Baylor? Probably not. But it was still a great road win for Arnold and Auburn, and they’ll use that road experience in this hostile environment.

I lean with the Sooners as I think their defense is much better than the Tigers, but instead of backing them on the spread since we missed -6.5, I’ll get cheeky with a two man player prop parlay. Auburn also has to go to College Station next week to face the Texas A&M Aggies at Kyle Field. While Arnold won’t be looking past this matchup, the rest of the team might be.

Auburn vs. Oklahoma Prediction: Oklahoma Wins & Covers, Over 46.5

Best Bet: Jackson Arnold/John Mateer 40+ Rushing Yards Each (+165) BetOnline

All we need is 40+ rushing yards from both quarterbacks, and it shouldn’t be too much to ask. Now, I like both of these guys at their original numbers, Arnold at 42.5 and Mateer at 52.5, but this price to enough for me.

Jackson Arnold as double digit rush attempts in two of three games this year, and against Baylor he had 16 carries for 137 yards and two touchdowns while only taking a single sack. Going back to last season, Arnold had 15+ carries in five of his last six down the stretch, and tends to use his legs in bigger games. He turns into a very dynamic rusher and relies on his feet to extend drives. On the road against his former team, he will certainly do exactly that.

Mateer leads the Sooners in carries, and had 19 for 74 yards and two touchdowns against Michigan. He’s taken just one sack per game this season, so I don’t see either QB losing very many rushing yards due to their offensive line. Much like Arnold, Mateer relies on his legs when he gets into trouble and isn’t afraid of contact. He cleared 50+ yards in 8/12 games last season and has done so in 2/3 this season, rushing for nearly five yards per carry. I see him needing to use his legs to avoid some sacks, considering the Tigers had four against Baylor.

Both of these quarterbacks are very similar in playing style. They are true dual threats who improvise, avoid sacks with their shiftiness and revert to running pretty quickly if they can’t find anyone open. I expect both teams to put on a show and both quarterbacks to continue their incredible performances, especially on the ground.
