The Iron Bowl takes place on Saturday night on ABC as the No. 10 ranked Alabama Crimson Tide head across the state to take on the Auburn Tigers. We’ve seen plenty of editions of this rivalry, including several in which both teams were ranked, but that is not the case this season. Auburn has been through a brutal SEC schedule and have just one conference win to show for it. Will they be able to show up to host their top 10 rival, who also needs a win? #10 Alabama Crimson Tide vs. Auburn Tigers NCAA Football Insights

This game means plenty to both teams. First off, it’s a rivalry game. Second, the Tigers have been in a position to spoil Alabama’s season before and they embrace that role. Auburn also sits just one win away from bowl eligibility, so there’s plenty of motivation on Senior Night. Despite having just one SEC win this year, they faced five teams ranked inside the top 16 already this year, and now take on another top 10 team.

As for the Tide, they are No. 10 in the nation. That puts them barely into the field of 12 for the College Football Playoff as things currently stand. And with the Longhorns knocking off No. 1 Texas A&M yesterday, the Tide need a win to leave them out of potential “bubble” conversations from the committee. If they win, they head to the SEC Championship, which should be more than enough to put them into the CFP. But Auburn always plays them tough, and this victory on the road will not come easy. Can they stay motivated through the finish line?

So we’ve established that there is plenty of motivation on both sides, but it’s not like either team needed it. It’s the Iron Bowl, a classic CFB rivalry. And anything can happen. Alabama vs. Auburn Prediction: Alabama Wins and Covers, Over 46.5

Let’s talk about Auburn’s defense. They are pretty good, ranking top 25 in points per play. They also rank No. 4 in the country in yards allowed per carry. The rushing defense is there, no doubt about it. But the secondary is not. Overall, Auburn also ranks outside the top 40 in opponent third down conversion percentage and are No. 79 in opponent red zone scoring rate.

Now, Alabama doesn’t have a good rushing attack. It’s basically nonexistent. But it won’t matter, because Ty Simpson is going to pick apart this Tigers’ secondary and move the ball in chunks. The Tigers secondary is bottom 40 in yards per pass allowed, and bottom 50 in opponent completion percentage. They don’t see too much attack through the air because they’re usually losing, but that’s all the Tide can do.

The Tide are easily a top 20 passing attack, ranking top 10 in passing yards per game and second in interceptions thrown. They are also top 25 in red zone scoring and No. 17 in third down conversions. Moving the ball and putting it in the end zone shouldn’t be a problem. Alabama might be playing for their spot in the College Football Playoff, so I expect them to leave no doubt on the road Saturday Night.
