#9 Notre Dame vs. Stanford – November 29
Welcome to the final week of the regular season for college football. So many teams have so much to play for, while plenty of others do not. That is the beauty of Week 14. As a bettor, there is not a lot to like this weekend, personally. However, this matchup between No. 9 Notre Dame and Stanford is one of the more intriguing spots on the slate.
Line Movement
The line in this matchup opened at 29.5 in favor of the Fighting Irish, and the number has since climbed to 32.5. The total opened at 50.5 and has remained steady. I am all over the Fighting Irish this weekend. I grabbed the 32.5 and have zero concern about getting poor closing line value.
Foot on the Gas
This is another clear spot where the Irish should keep the pressure on from start to finish. They are going to do everything possible to close out the regular season by destroying Stanford. Notre Dame needs to keep its foot down in order to leave zero doubt in the College Football Playoff Committee mind that they belong in the conversation. They do, but there is no reason to ease up now.
Since losing their first two games of the season to Miami and Texas A&M, the Fighting Irish have steamrolled everyone in their path. They have outscored opponents by an average of 29.7 points per game since those initial losses. Yes, they are coming off a 70 to 7 dismantling of Syracuse, and no, I do not expect that level again, but I do expect a win by at least 35 plus points. This is a team scoring over 40 points per game, facing a Stanford defense that allowed two of its three ranked opponents this season to score 42 or more, those teams being Miami and Virginia.
On top of that Stanford is coming off a 31 to 10 win over Cal this past weekend. After that win the Cardinal faithful stormed the field in celebration, which makes this a classic fade the storm spot. Fade teams coming off emotional wins that lead to their fans storming the field.
I do not see anyone stopping Notre Dame from closing their season as one of the most dominant teams in the country. They need to finish strong with their only blemishes coming against a top SEC program and a team dealing with its own issues but still ranked inside the top 15. I fully expect Notre Dame to cover this spread and run up the score. If the number concerns you, take their team total. It is shockingly lower than it was against Syracuse.
