#4 Georgia vs. #10 Alabama – December 6
Welcome into conference championship week, where we dive right into my favorite conference, the SEC. Cry about it SEC haters, this is and always will be the superior conference. We are getting a good old fashion clash between the No. 4 Georgia Bulldogs and the No. 10 Alabama Crimson Tide.
Both teams are coming off very impressive regular season performances. The Crimson Tide may have delivered one of the better turnarounds aside from Notre Dame, after getting embarrassed in week one by Florida State. They improved every week and now find themselves one win away from taking home another SEC championship, which would mark Kalen DeBoer’s first as the head coach of Alabama. On the other side, the Bulldogs enter coming off an impressive 11-1 season, their only loss coming against this Crimson Tide team. However, outside of that game, they controlled everyone. They have been a bit slow in the first half, but Kirby Smart has always had his boys ready to finish strong.
Opening Lines
The line opened Sunday morning at 1.5 in favor of Georgia, essentially a pick’em with the moneyline sitting at -115 and -105. I grabbed the Bulldogs immediately on the moneyline at -120. I know the line has since gone up 20 cents, but depending on how much juice you are willing to pay, I would still take the $1.40 price tag, or anything below -2.5. As for the total, the number has held at 47.5. I lean under, but I think I always do whenever I see two great defenses clashing. So I am sticking to rooting for the Bulldogs in this spot.
Unimpressive Tide
For starters, I love the revenge angle for Georgia. In their last two games, all they really did was coast against Charlotte and Georgia Tech. Not exactly two teams worth jumping out of bed for. Sure, their game against Georgia Tech last year was a thriller, but Georgia has its eyes on bigger things than taking down its baby brother. Would Georgia Tech even qualify as their baby brother? I digress. This is a game Georgia can be fully motivated for, and a game that gives them a chance to get back at the Tide for that early season loss.
Another reason is that I have not liked the way Alabama has looked over the past few weeks. I mentioned earlier how they seemed to improve every week, but since playing LSU, they have looked flat. Yes, they beat Eastern Illinois by 56, but they lost to Oklahoma at home and barely slipped past Auburn in the Iron Bowl. If Auburn had completed more passes, the Tigers probably win that game. They only completed 46% of their throws, going 18 for 39, and still outgained Alabama by 131 total yards. That was a game Alabama needed as well. With two losses already on the resume, they could not afford another if they wanted any path to the College Football Playoff.
For those two reasons alone, I will be all over the Georgia Bulldogs in the SEC championship. The Crimson Tide appear to have reached their peak and are regressing as the weeks go by. Meanwhile, this is the time Georgia gears up for a serious playoff run toward another national championship.
