2025 SEC Football Preview, Picks & Predictions: Who Can Take Down Longhorns?

SEC football picks

We are about four weeks away from NCAA Football on our screens as Week 0 kicks off on August 23. We will have to wait until Week 1 to get some action in the SEC, but we are in for a huge season in the powerhouse of College Football. Although the Big Ten has had the National Champion the past couple of years, the Southeastern Conference is ready to restore order to the universe. This is our official SEC Preview for the 2025 season, full of picks, predictions, and betting odds for the entire conference.

You can place all of your CFB Futures action at one of our recommended online sportsbooks.

Let’s start by looking at the recent history of the conference and at the betting odds related to the SEC.

Past 10 SEC Champions

  • 2024: Georgia Bulldogs
  • 2023: Alabama Crimson Tide
  • 2022: Georgia Bulldogs
  • 2021: Alabama Crimson Tide
  • 2020: Alabama Crimson Tide
  • 2019: LSU Tigers
  • 2018: Alabama Crimson Tide
  • 2017: Georgia Bulldogs
  • 2016: Alabama Crimson Tide
  • 2015: Alabama Crimson Tide

As you can see, the past five and nine of the last 10 champions have been either Alabama or Georgia, with the outlier being Joe Burrow and the 2019 LSU Tigers. You’ve got to go back to 2013 to find the next non-Bama or Bulldog champion, when the Auburn Tigers last hoisted the trophy.

Fun Fact: The last champion that wasn’t Alabama, Georgia, or had a Tiger for a mascot was the Florida Gators in 2008, led by none other than Tim Tebow.

Odds to Win the CFP (SEC Schools)

  • Texas Longhorns +600
  • Georgia Bulldogs +650
  • Alabama Crimson Tide +900
  • LSU Tigers +1400
  • Ole Miss Rebels +3300
  • Texas A&M Aggies +3300
  • Florida Gators +3300
  • Oklahoma Sooners +5000
  • Auburn Tigers +5000
  • South Carolina Gamecocks +5000
  • Tennessee Volunteers +6000

Holy cow. The Powerhouse of College Football remains, as 11 SEC schools find themselves amongst the top-18 favorites on the overall odds board. This is slated to be a very competitive season in the SEC, with plenty of talent spread out across the conference.

Texas and Georgia are the two overall betting favorites to lift the trophy this upcoming season. But how many teams can the SEC sneak into the College Football Playoff this year?

Odds to Make College Football Playoff (SEC Schools)

  • Texas -325
  • Georgia -260
  • Alabama -185
  • LSU +130
  • Ole Miss +160
  • Texas A&M +200
  • Tennessee +285
  • Auburn +350
  • Florida +400
  • South Carolina +400
  • Oklahoma +525

The first thing I notice is across those bottom five teams listed, some have better odds to make the CFP, with others having better odds to win the whole thing when compared to other schools. Florida is a higher up the odds board to win the National Championship than Auburn and Tennessee, yet the Tigers and Volunteers have shorter odds to make the playoff in general.

My takeaway: This is going to be a very competitive conference once again, as it looks to get the National Championship trophy back from the Big Ten.

Let’s look at the odds to win the SEC, thus earning a first round bye in the College Football Playoff.

LaNorris Sellers and the Gamecocks could be sneaky this NCAA Football season - SEC Picks and Predictions

LaNorris Sellers and the Gamecocks could be sneaky this NCAA Football season

Odds to Win SEC Championship

  • Texas +275
  • Georgia +300
  • Alabama +400
  • LSU +700
  • Ole Miss +1400
  • Texas A&M +1600
  • Florida +1800
  • Tennessee +2000
  • Oklahoma +2000
  • Auburn +2000
  • South Carolina +2000
  • Missouri +4000

I left off four teams. The Arkansas Razorbacks are priced at 125-1, the Kentucky Wildcats and Vanderbilt Commodores are 300-1, and bringing up the rear are the Mississippi State Bulldogs, who you can snag at 500-1 to win the SEC this season. I do not recommend anyone take that bet. But let’s talk about who might make some noise in this conference.

2025 SEC Football Team Breakdown

No. 16 Mississippi State Bulldogs

The Bulldogs are the consensus bottom of the barrel in the SEC this season. After a winless conference outing last year, anything is a step up, but it could be another long season for the Bulldogs.

After going to Southern Miss in Week 1, they have to host a feisty Arizona State Sun Devils team. While they get to host the Egg Bowl and avoid Alabama and Auburn, the Bulldogs host both Texas and Georgia, and may be on their way to 20 straight conference losses dating back to the 2023 season (Last SEC Win: October 21 @ Arkansas, 7-3).

No. 15 Kentucky Wildcats

Kentucky has nine new starters coming in on both sides of the ball, with six of them on offense, including the left side of the O-Line and their QB. The one positive I can take away from this team, is Dante Dowdell, transfer from Nebraska, could boost a bad rushing offense. However, it won’t matter if he doesn’t have an offensive line.

The Wildcats also have one of the toughest schedules, some say Top 10 in strength of schedule, with games against Georgia, Texas, Ole Miss, Florida, Tennessee, Auburn and South Carolina. Just wait for basketball season, Wildcat fans.

Diego Pavia returns for the Commodores this season - SEC Picks and Predictions

Diego Pavia returns for the Commodores this season

No. 14 Vanderbilt Commodores

Diego Pavia returns after leading Vandy to a bowl game, but it will be tough to get back there. They go on the road against South Carolina, Alabama, Texas and Tennessee, while having to host Auburn and LSU as well.

Pencil in Alabama -34.5 in Tuscaloosa on October 4 when the Commodores come to town after last season. Pavia does have four new offensive linemen and two new receivers who will need to gel with the system, and one can only hope the defense steps up when needed.

No. 13 Arkansas Razorbacks

Taylen Green leads a Razorback offense with three new linemen, a new tight end, and an entirely new wide receiver room. The Hogs had a bowl win after a 6-6 (3-5) season last year, and one could only hope they improve. But they have two tough non-conference games hosting Notre Dame and going to face the Memphis Tigers.

Then when SEC play begins, they take on Ole Miss, Tennessee, LSU and Texas all on the road, while hosting Texas A&M and Auburn. Sure, they could pick up a win hosting the Bulldogs, but they mainly play the top of the league, with the Missouri Tigers coming to town to end the season.

I have placed a unit on Arkansas Under 5.5 Wins at (-130), as I do not see this team being bowl eligible.

No. 12 Missouri Tigers

Missouri has a completely new look at offense after plenty of pieces left last season. New QB Beau Pribula comes to the SEC from Penn State ready to lead Mizzou.

The Tigers host the Kansas Jayhawks in Week 2, reigniting the Border War, and have the benefit of hosting South Carolina, Alabama and Texas A&M. They have to take on the Oklahoma Sooners in Norman and Auburn on the road, but if they handle business elsewhere (@ Vandy, vs. Miss State, @ Arkansas) they might go bowling for a sixth straight season.

No. 11 Oklahoma Sooners

I am low on the Sooners this season, at least lower than most. John Mateer takes over at QB as a solid dual threat transfer from Washington State, and Jayden Ott comes over from Cal to start at running back. But of course, let’s talk scheduling.

While they should pick up at least three non-conference wins, hosting Michigan in Week 2 could be a bit scary. As far as SEC play goes, they host Auburn, Ole Miss and LSU. Of course they play Texas at the Cotton Bowl, but then they go to South Carolina, Tennessee and Alabama. Worst case, if the new transfers don’t work out, the Sooners could be staring down the barrel of a long season.

I have no interest in paying -180 for over 6.5 wins, but I also think under 6.5 (+150) is a little too sweaty. Although I lean under.

Lane Kiffin and the Rebels are looking to rebuild this year - SEC Picks and Predictions

Lane Kiffin and the Rebels are looking to rebuild this year

No. 10 Ole Miss Rebels

Life without Jaxson Dart begins for Lane Kiffin and the Rebels who have a new guards on the line and two new starting receivers. The Rebels host a tough Tulane team in Week 4 in a look ahead spot to hosting the LSU Tigers.

Along with LSU, South Carolina and Florida both come to town, while the Rebels face Oklahoma and Georgia on the road. After burning me on their win total last year, I’ll admit I looked extra long at their under 8.5 this season, but decided to hold off. They have the benefit of having their toughest games at home (minus Georgia), and only go on the road four times all season.

If they simply win out at home, they’ll hit eight wins.

No. 9 Auburn Tigers

Jackson Arnold gets ready to lead the Tigers into the SEC after just two conference wins last year. While they do have a decent looking offense, it all depends on the hands of Arnold, who failed to perform late in the season against tough SEC opponents.

This year, the Tigers open the season in Waco facing the Baylor Bears, and have three very tough games to start. Auburn has to play @ Oklahoma, @ Texas A&M and then host Georgia to start their conference season. While they do have an easier schedule after that, they still have to pull themselves up after several probable losses and go to Tuscaloosa to end the season.

Auburn could be sneaky if Arnold lives up to expectations, but I simply don’t think he solves this team’s issues.

No. 8 Tennessee Volunteers

Josh Heupel earned my respect when he told everyone that Tennessee would move on from Nico Iamaleava. The Volunteers went out and got Joey Aguliar, who ironically had just committed to UCLA, which is where Nico is playing this season.

Tennessee returns everyone on their defense, and only replaces a few pieces on offense, but they do have true freshman David Sanders Jr. starting at RT. However the Vols have a favorable schedule.

They host Georgia and Oklahoma, while having to go to Tuscaloosa to face the Tide and take on the Gators in Gainesville late in the season. If Aguliar pans out, the Vols could pull off some wins they don’t necessarily deserve, but their floor is fairly low if he doesn’t work out.

How far can DJ Lagway lead the Florida Gators? SEC Picks and Predictions

How far can DJ Lagway lead the Florida Gators?

No. 7 Florida Gators

People are high on the Florida Gators and DJ Lagway leading the charge, but I’ve got some pause. Mainly because Billy Napier still leads this team, and last year the defense couldn’t stop anybody. The Gators face LSU, Texas A&M and Ole Miss on the road in SEC play, plus they have to face a very fired up Miami Hurricanes team on the road in Week 4 as well.

They host Tennessee and Texas plus they play Georgia in Jacksonville for the World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party. The Gators will need to prove they can play with the best of the best, but I don’t think they are quite there. Offensively, they should get into plenty of shootouts, but I have little faith in the defense helping at all.

No. 6 South Carolina Gamecocks

LaNorris Sellers is sixth on the Heisman odds board and is ready to lead the Gamecocks. However, the defense lost plenty of contributors and has at least three new starters to replace. South Carolina will have to go to LSU, Ole Miss, and Texas A&M, plus they’ll host the Clemson Tigers to end the season.

The Gamecocks also host the Sooners and Crimson Tide, making breaking into this College Football Playoff very difficult, despite being a popular dark horse. This team will need to find a couple of road wins to really make some waves.

No. 5 Texas A&M Aggies

The Aggies bring in KC Concepcion to catch passes from Marcel Reed, who will be throwing behind five returning offensive linemen who are all experienced. Le’Veon Moss returns in the backfield as well, and we know Reed can run. The question will be whether or not he can throw, but with all the time in the world, I bet he progresses in the air.

The Aggies have to go to South Bend early in the season to face the Irish, but they host Auburn, Florida and South Carolina. On the road in SEC play, they go to LSU and close out the season in Austin against the Longhorns. This is a favorable schedule in my eyes, for a team who is just a few clicks away from greatness.

No. 4 Alabama Crimson Tide

I’m not sure how the Tide replace Jalen Milroe, but they’ll sure try. And it’s still Alabama. The defense may carry this team as Ty Simpson steps up to lead the squad. Standout WR Ryan Williams will certainly be entertaining to watch, and again, this defense is strong enough to keep them in any game.

The Tide host Wisconsin but then have a bye week before going to Athens and facing the Bulldogs. They end the season at Auburn and also have to play the Gamecocks in South Carolina, but at home they get Tennessee, Oklahoma, and a Vandy game I’m sure they’ve had circled.

While I don’t see them reaching the conference championship, Alabama should sneak in to the 12 team playoff with this schedule.

Garrett Nussmeier could win the Heisman this season, just like former LSU QB Joe Burrow - SEC Picks and Predictions

Garrett Nussmeier could win the Heisman this season, just like former LSU QB Joe Burrow

No. 3 LSU Tigers

The Tigers offense is ready to go. Garrett Nussmeier is involved in Heisman talks as the second favorite on the board coming in to this season, behind only Arch Manning. They get things started right away in Week 1, facing a very tough Cade Klubnik led Clemson team as two Heisman hopefuls go head to head to kick off the season.

As far as SEC play goes, the Tigers travel to Ole Miss, Alabama and Oklahoma. But they get to host Florida, South Carolina and Texas A&M, completely avoiding Tennessee, Texas, and Georgia. I have high hopes for this aerial attack, and I think the defense has certainly improved as well.

No. 2 Texas Longhorns

Arch Manning steps up to lead the Longhorns, and even if he drops the ball, the defense is good enough to carry them to the SEC Championship. They have some of the best players on that side of the ball, and arguably the best unit in the country. There are plenty of skill players surrounding Manning as well, but the longhorns offensive success relies solely on him. Much like Aguliar and Tennessee, if their QB doesn’t pan out, what do they have?

Lucky for the Longhorns, their defense is much better than the Vols. This kid is the Heisman favorite for a reason, but I still want to see it on the field first. Not only do they open the season against the defending National Champion Ohio State Buckeyes on the road, but they go to Gainesville and Athens.

Texas gets to avoid teams like Alabama, Tennessee, Ole Miss, and LSU, but could have their hands full hosting Oklahoma and Texas A&M if they aren’t careful.

No. 1 Georgia Bulldogs

I think we see a repeat of last year’s SEC Championship, with Georgia and Texas meeting in Atlanta. The Bulldogs have a very easy schedule, with just three road games all year. They have to go to Knoxville, Auburn, and Mississippi State. I have a feeling someone might need to beat Georgia in Athens, or else they could go undefeated.

The Bulldogs have a joke of a non-conference schedule, playing Charlotte and Georgia Tech to end the season. Sure, they have to play Alabama, Texas, and Florida, but all of those games are at home (or a neutral site). Gunnar Stockton is ready to lead an offense whose pass catching improves by adding WR Zachariah Branch from USC.

I would be comfortable taking their over 9.5 wins at whatever juice you want to pay, and also don’t hate them to win the SEC at 3-1 or higher.
