Heisman Trophy Insights
That is a wrap!
After taking down Ohio State in the Big Ten Championship, Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza sealed the deal and locked up the 2025 Heisman Trophy. The star passer threw for 222 yards, completed 65% of his attempts, and finished with one touchdown and one interception against the top defense in the country. With Vanderbilt quarterback Diego Pavia at home this weekend while Alabama faced Georgia in the SEC Championship, anything Julian Sayin or Mendoza added only strengthened their cases.
It is incredibly cool that the top two contenders helped revive two historically rough programs. Indiana is the losingest program of all time, and Vanderbilt has not been relevant since Jay Cutler. Even so, the dominance Mendoza and the Hoosiers showed in the Big Ten outweighs anything Vanderbilt accomplished this season. I am a die-hard SEC guy, and I usually lean that way. Even though the conference has not produced a national champion in a couple of years, it remains a gauntlet to survive, which we saw with zero undefeated SEC teams this season. I still expect Pavia to pull plenty of support from SEC die-hards, so I do not think this race will end in a lopsided vote.
Is there value in Pavia?
For full transparency, I grabbed Diego Pavia at 15 to 1 on Saturday evening. He will get support from the south, and SEC leaning voters will ride with him. Do I think he wins? No, but anything can happen. Last year I took Ashton Jeanty the Monday before the Heisman Ceremony because the value was too good, and I still believe he was robbed of that award. Pavia did face the tougher schedule in my view, but he was at a UFC event Saturday while Mendoza led his team to a conference title. My advice is this, if you want to get involved and have not entered the market, take Pavia at anything above 10 to 1. Beyond that, stay away. It is not worth jumping in during the week of the ceremony.

Indiana delivered a season that will live in program history, and Fernando Mendoza stood at the center of it all. His rise, paired with the resurgence of a team that spent decades at the bottom, created one of the best stories in college football. Diego Pavia pushed hard and earned every bit of respect he will receive, but Mendoza built the strongest case when it mattered most. The journey, the wins, and the moments that defined this race all point toward a well deserved finish for the Hoosiers star. This Heisman belongs in Bloomington.
