#20 Illinois vs #1 Oregon Predictions

Back again with another system play for Week 8! This time, it’s another storm fade. Illinois stormed the field Saturday after knocking off Big Ten rival then-No. 24 Michigan 21-7. This is the second time this season Illini fans have celebrated by storming the field; the first was in Week 2 against then-No. 19 Kansas. Let’s be real—you don’t get to storm the field after beating Kansas and Michigan in the same season, especially when this isn’t the same Michigan team as last year.

The Ducks are back

Now, it’s all about Oregon this week. Some may argue that Oregon can’t cover a big spread in back-to-back weeks. The Ducks dominated Purdue last Friday, winning 35-0 as 30.5-point favorites. But remember, Purdue had just come off a massive game against Illinois the week prior, nearly winning as 22.5-point underdogs. They were understandably hungover from that exertion.

This Ducks team is well-coached, talented, and hungry to make their mark in the Big Ten. Their defense is stellar, allowing fewer than 20 points per game. Only Boise State and Ohio State have managed to score 20 or more against them this season.

Prove it to me Illinois

On the flip side, Illinois’ resume isn’t impressive. Their win over Kansas—who is 2-5 this year—barely stands out. They lost 21-7 to Penn State in Week 5 and scraped by Purdue, winning by just one point as 22.5-point favorites. Their recent win over Michigan, now 4-3 and unranked, doesn’t carry much weight either. Their toughest win was likely the road victory against Nebraska, or perhaps the Purdue game. Bottom line: weak schedule.

I don’t trust Illinois, but I do trust the Ducks to keep rolling through the Big Ten. This is my “prove it” game of the week. Last week, it was Texas as 5.5-point favorites against Georgia; this week, it’s Illinois. Show me you’re legit this season.

Give me the Ducks!
