Wisconsin vs Oregon Basketball Prediction & Picks (2023 NIT Quarterfinals) cover

Wisconsin and Oregon have put the disappointment of missing out on March Madness with two NIT wins apiece. This evening, they will face off in Eugene (9:00 pm ET, ESPN) for a place in next week’s NIT semifinals.

The Ducks (21-14), the top seed in their quarter of the NIT bracket, reached this round with convincing wins over UC Irvine and UCF.

The Badgers (19-14), the #2 seed in Oregon’s quarter, comfortably strolled past Bradley in the first round, but they had a much more arduous 40 minutes in a four-point win over Librty.

Who will take the win in this Big Ten vs Pac-12 clash? Read on for our Wisconsin vs Oregon basketball, as well as our picks for today’s matchup in Eugene.

Will Defense Drive the Ducks Past the Badgers?

Wisconsin vs Oregon NIT prediction preview Ducks mascot

Despite being without N’Faly Dante, Jermaine Couisnard, and Will Richardson, the Ducks have more than held their own offensively thus far in the NIT.

It remains to be seen if Dante (13.4 PPG, 8.4 RPG) and Couisnard (12.8 PPG, 3.1 RPG) will return tonight–Richardson is out for the season–but they are showing that they can score and win without being at full strength.

In their 84-58 win over UC Irvine in the first round, three-point shooting led the way, as they were 12 of 28 (42.9%) from outside against the Anteaters.

In their 68-54 win over UCF in the second round, two-point accuracy was the key, as they were 18 of 28 (64.3%) on two-point shots against the Knights.

However, defense is as big a reason for their success thus far as anything else. After limiting UCI to 17.4% (4 of 23) shooting from three and 30.0% (24 of 80) shooting overall from the field, the Ducks held UCF to 16.7% (5 of 30) from three and 30.6% (19 of 62) overall from the field.

If Wisconsin, who didn’t make the NCAA Tournament because they had too many games in which scoring was a struggle, goes backwards after scoring 81 points against Bradley and 75 points against Liberty, the Badgers are likely to be in trouble.

When Oregon has allowed fewer than 65 points this season, they are a perfect 11-0 SU and ATS. And when they have allowed exactly 65 points this season, they are 2-1 SU and ATS, with the lone SU loss a 65-56 loss at UCLA on December 4.

And if the Ducks can score more than 65 points again, there’s a good chance that they will be making a trip to Las Vegas next week. When they have scored more than 65 points this season, they are 21-5 SU and 16-9-1 ATS.

In all 11 of the games Oregon has allowed fewer than 65 points, they have scored more than 65 points. And as mentioned above, the Ducks are a perfect 11-0 SU and ATS in those games.
