Saint Mary’s has already beaten Gonzaga twice, and I see no reason why they cannot do it again. The Gaels boast an elite defense that thrives on slowing the pace, while the Zags have struggled against stronger competition. With a tight matchup expected, I am siding with the better defensive team to get it done.

Revenge game this. Revenge game that. “It is hard to beat a team three times.” I know, I know. I do not care. Give me the Gaels.

Sure, Gonzaga has been playing incredible basketball since February 1—12th best team, per Bart Torvik. But who have they played? Saint Mary’s twice—lost both matchups. They closed out the season beating Santa Clara and San Francisco twice. The rest of those five wins came against teams ranked 150th or worse. Since February 1, the Zags have maintained a top-25 offense and defense while going 4-6 against the spread and winning 8 of 10 games. Have they turned a corner at the right time? Maybe, but I lean toward the better defense in this spot.

During that same stretch, the Gaels have had the best defense away from home, excelling in rebounding, free throw rate, and perimeter defense. Since early February, they have held opponents under 60 points per game on the road. Saint Mary’s will do everything possible to slow Gonzaga’s offense to a crawl.

The Gaels are one of the slowest teams in the country, while Gonzaga thrives in transition. I think defense takes over tonight, and I expect a close game. I took the Gaels’ moneyline for fun, but I highly endorse the +3.5. Let’s get this overrated Gonzaga team out of our face and make some money!
