USC faces Purdue just one night after a grueling double-overtime win over Rutgers. Typically, I would fade the Trojans in this spot, but Purdue’s defensive struggles make this game all about scoring. Instead of worrying about the spread, I am expecting a high-scoring battle.

Coming off a double-overtime victory over Rutgers, the USC Trojans must quickly regroup to take on the Purdue Boilermakers tonight. Normally, I would fade USC after such a grueling game, but I do not like how high the spread is—so we are rooting for points instead. Why?
Since February 1st, Purdue has struggled defensively, ranking 21st worst in effective field goal percentage defense, 37th worst in turnover defense, 41st worst in free throw rate defense, and dead last in two-point defense. On top of that, their opponents are getting off threes at a high rate, ranking 276th in three-point rate defense.
USC’s defense is no better, ranking 285th in effective field goal percentage defense, 22nd worst in defensive rebounding, and 308th in two-point defense. On the road this season, USC has allowed 81 points per game, while Purdue has given up 71.5.
Offensively, both teams have been strong. Since February 1st, they rank in the top 35 in overall offense (Purdue is fifth), top 50 in effective field goal percentage (Purdue is 14th), and top 15 in three-point shooting. Both have averaged over 77 points per game during that stretch.
Purdue is coming off a loss to Illinois last Friday and has had plenty of time to rest and prepare. If their offense stays consistent and their defense remains shaky, USC should have enough opportunities to keep up. Despite USC’s heavy minutes last night, this game should feature plenty of scoring—root for points!
