What a week this is for Conference USA. On Saturday, FAU, who swept the regular season and tournament titles this season, will face off with San Diego State in the Final Four in Houston. But first up, UAB and North Texas will meet tonight in an all-Conference USA clash for the NIT championship (9:30 pm ET, ESPN2).

All three teams are departing for the American Athletic Conference, but before they do, they will get to fly the flag for Conference USA in a spotlight the conference hasn’t seen since the likes of Cincinnati, Louisville, Marquette, and Memphis were members.

Familiar Foes Face Off for NIT Title

In college basketball, you won’t often see two teams face off four times in one season, but here we are.

The Mean Green won the two regular season meetings, claiming a 63-52 win in Birmingham on January 21 and an 82-79 win in overtime in Denton on February 9. Then, in the Conference USA tournament, UAB broke a three-game losing streak against North Texas with a 76-69 win.

How is their most meaningful meeting likely to turn out?

For the season, UAB is only 17-18-2 ATS, but those numbers have had a real improvement down the stretch. In their last 13 games, the Blazers are 12-1 SU and 9-4-0 ATS. Also, when favored by three or fewer points this season, UAB is 5-3 SU and ATS.

North Texas also didn’t have fantastic numbers against the spread for a good portion of the season. And like the Blazers, the Mean Green have seen a big turnaround in that area. They were just 9-11-0 ATS in their first 20 games against Division I opposition this season, but they have since posted a 12-3-0 ATS mark as part of a 13-2 SU stretch.

This matchup could go either way, but I’m rolling with the Blazers to take this all-Conference USA/soon-to-be AAC clash.

UAB has been held to 65 or fewer points only three times this season, in their home loss to UNT, in a 65-59 home win over Louisiana Tech (in the following game), and their 78-56 loss to FAU in the C-USA tournament title tilt.

So, if they come out on top tonight, it’s highly likely that they will score at least 66 points in the process.
