Texas vs. #6 Duke Picks and Predictions: Dick Vitale Invitational

Cameron Boozer is the top freshman on the Wooden Award oddsboard - Texas Duke Picks

The Texas Longhorns are out in North Carolina taking on the No. 6 ranked Duke Blue Devils as both teams open up their season tonight. Now this isn’t a home game for the Cameron Crazies, but they will certainly fill the Spectrum Center in Charlotte this evening. We’ve seen this spread steam in the direction of the Blue Devils, as they opened as 7.5 point favorites, but are now supposed to win by over double digits. Is that too many points for the freshmen to cover? Let’s get into our favorite picks and find out.

Texas Longhorns vs. #6 Duke Blue Devils NCAA Basketball Insights

Sean Miller begins his campaign as head coach of the Texas Longhorns tonight against Duke. After his departure from Arizona, he went back to coach the Xavier Musketeers where he made the NCAA Tournament twice in three years. The Longhorns replaced their head coach as well as both leading scorers in Tre Johnson and Arthur Kaluma, leaving tons of pressure on the returning bodies and new players.

As for Duke, they’ve been here before. They came up short with Cooper Flagg and company last year, but absolutely reloaded by adding Cayden and Cameron Boozer. The latter is on the Wooden Watch early in the year, as Cameron will be one of the most exciting freshmen in the country. His brother is no slouch either, but those two and fellow freshman Dame Sarr will have lots of weight on their shoulders to lead this team.

The Dukies will also turn to Caleb Foster who will see a much bigger role in Year 3 with the Blue Devils, along with Maliq Brown and Patrick Ngongba II who will lead the front court. Texas has plenty to replace, but they do have a nice returning back court of Tramon Mark and Jordan Pope, both of whom put up 10+ points per game last season.

Last year, Duke was one of the slowest teams in the college hoops. I don’t see that changing. However, Texas was also one of the slowest, but Xavier (where Miller coached last year) was in the top 100 in adjusted tempo. This leads me to think we see a fast paced attack from the Longhorns this season, but will they be able to score?

This is a tough environment to start your campaign at a new school, in what will probably feel like a road game. I trust Duke to control the pace and set the tone, limiting offensive possessions for the Longhorns. Last year Texas failed to play their top opponents well, going 0-5 straight up against top 10 teams and 5-8 overall against ranked foes. I see Duke’s defensive presence being too much for a Longhorns team that will rely on new players all around to contribute. These things take time, and I want to see more from this group.

We saw Duke involved in some low scoring affairs early on against good teams last year, as we saw 149 total points against Kentucky, 147 against Kansas, and just 124 against Arizona. The lights might be a bit too bright for the freshmen early on, and I see both offenses struggling to put points on the board in this contest.
