We have a Big East showdown at The William B. Finneran Pavilion, where the 7-4 Villanova Wildcats host the 5-6 Seton Hall Pirates. Both teams are coming off very different performances—Seton Hall fell to Rutgers on a heartbreaking last-second three-pointer on Saturday, while Villanova rides a four-game winning streak, covering the spread in four of their last five matchups.

Today, the focus is not on picking a side, but rather on the total. Still, I lean Seton Hall given how well they played against Rutgers, combined with a spread that continues to hover around double digits. That being said, I refuse to endure the stress of backing a Pirates offense that has been nothing short of dreadful. Let us talk about the under.

Fair warning: Watching this game might feel like watching paint dry. Both teams rank in the bottom 15 in tempo, and combined, they are 6-14-1 to the under this season. Villanova has been the slightly “over” team in this spot, but Seton Hall’s lackluster offense and strong defense will likely dictate the pace, which is why the total sits below 130 and the spread opened at double digits.

Great Defense vs Great Offense

On the road this season, Seton Hall has fielded one of the best defenses in the country, ranking seventh in adjusted defensive efficiency. The Pirates are also top 70 in effective field goal percentage defense, turnover percentage, defensive rebounding (17th), three-point defense, and block percentage. Their offense, however, is an absolute mess, ranking in the 300s in adjusted offensive efficiency, turnover percentage, two-point percentage, and free throw percentage. The only area of competence for Seton Hall’s offense is three-point shooting, where they are surprisingly efficient. Yet, they rarely rely on it, sitting at 296th in three-point rate.

Villanova’s offense is the polar opposite. The Wildcats boast a top-20 offense that can do it all—shoot efficiently from anywhere, crash the boards for second-chance points, knock down free throws, and protect the ball well. Their defense, on the other hand, has been mediocre to start the season, sitting inside the top 150 in most categories.

With this being the conference opener for both teams, the intensity will be high. A great offense versus a great defense promises to be a compelling clash, and the slow tempo should ensure that points remain at a premium.
