San Francisco vs. Mississippi State Best Bet
Welcome to Sunday college hoops. After an incredible massive Saturday on the college hardwood, we turn to Sunday afternoon for more action. One of the more intriguing matchups takes place on a neutral court at Cadence Bank Arena in Tupelo, Mississippi, where the San Francisco Dons face the Mississippi State Bulldogs. Both teams are coming off very different performances. The Dons need to bounce back after yet another loss, while the Bulldogs enter following a win over Georgia Tech. Let the fun begin.
Never Go Against the Family
I may have a bias toward the Dons that I refuse to admit, but they are always such a complete team that remains under appreciated in the WCC. The conference has continued to rise over recent years, and it is no longer only Gonzaga. San Francisco is coming off three straight losses since beating Minnesota on November 22. During that stretch, they have fallen to Colorado, Nevada, and North Alabama. Now they enter this afternoon as a 4.5 point underdog, and I think San Francisco has a real chance to bounce back and at least keep this within four.
Despite Mississippi State having a slight edge in strength of schedule, the teams are separated by only 15 spots, which shows both have been tested early. Through nine games, the Dons sit inside the top 100 in offense and defense. Offensively, they excel at getting to the line, grabbing offensive boards, and shooting efficiently from deep. Defensively, they have locked down opponents inside, ranking 30th in two point defense. They do struggle to force turnovers, but Mississippi State does as well.
I think the Bulldogs will struggle to pull away if they are unable to push the pace. Mississippi State ranks inside the top 100 in tempo, per Haslametrics, while San Francisco sits almost 200 spots slower. The Bulldogs have not been very efficient on offense this season, sitting at 235th in three point percentage despite attempting close to 42 threes per game. They are also outside the top 115 in two point percentage. The Dons may not boast elite three point defense, but they are not going to allow easy finishes inside.
If San Francisco is able to control the pace on this neutral court, they should keep this tight from start to finish. They have played well against the three top 100 teams they have faced. The Dons need a response, especially after losing to North Alabama as a 16.5 point favorite. Head coach Chris Gerlufsen should have his group more than ready to challenge the Bulldogs.
Best Bet: San Francisco +4.5 (-113) on BetOnline
