Rice vs. #20 Tennessee Best Bet
Welcome into the only ranked game of the day that actually grabbed my attention, as Rice heads to Tennessee to take on the No. 20 Volunteers. The Owls are coming off a 71 to 64 win over East Texas A&M. Meanwhile, Tennessee is 3-0, coming off wins over North Florida, Northern Kentucky and Mercer. Tonight is the highest ranked opponent either team has faced this season. Can the Owls shock the nation in Knoxville? I love a dreamer.
Line Movement
The line opened at 26.5 in favor of the Volunteers and has dipped to 25.5 on some books. The total opened at 142.5 and moved up to 144.5. I am not worried about a side or a total in this matchup. I grabbed the Rice team total under 58.5 this morning and expect the Tennessee defense to smother the Owls offense all night.
Defense and Tempo
Tonight in Knoxville will be the slowest game the Owls have played this season. Tennessee is ranked in the bottom 20 in tempo. Rice likes to crawl as well, sitting at 329 in pace of play, but most of their opponents this season have been flying. Oregon and East Texas A&M in particular, both inside the top 150. The Owls are averaging 67 points per game against division one opponents, but Tennessee is not only the slowest team they have played. They are the best defensive team they have faced.
Through three games this season, Rick Barnes and his team sit sixth in adjusted defensive efficiency. They rank in the top 50 in free throw rate defense, two-point defense, and effective field goal percentage defense. This is an all around suffocating unit, and every Owl possession is going to be a grind. That is especially true when Rice ranks as the fourth worst team in two-point offense and 344th in offensive block percentage. Tennessee is also the best offensive rebounding team in the country while ranking 64th in defensive rebounding. The Volunteers should dominate the glass from start to finish.
Anyone Looking Ahead?
Looking at both schedules, Tennessee is not looking ahead to anything dangerous. Their next game is Tennessee State on Thursday, a team nearly 100 spots below Rice. The Owls, on the other hand, have Tarelton State next. This game means more to both sides, and I expect Barnes to have his boys locked in.
Rice faces a tall task in Knoxville against a Tennessee team built to dominate defensively and control the pace. The Volunteers are disciplined, physical and relentless on both ends of the floor, while the Owls will struggle to find consistent scoring opportunities. Expect Tennessee to set the tone early, control the glass and force Rice into a grind every possession. The big spread feels inflated, and points should be at a premium. The smart play is to ride the defense and cash the under.
Give me the Owls team total under.
