One of my favorite system plays in college sports is the fading the storm. The beauty of college sports is the little guy taking down a top ranked school. Following the win, students typically storm the court (or field) in celebration. Who doesn’t love a David and Goliath story? That’s right, losers. However, storming comes with a price.

The Stank:
The storyline is the stank, so let me save you the trouble of having something prior to what you are here for.
On Tuesday the Cornhuskers hosted Purdue, the number one ranked team in the country as 7.5-point underdogs. They proceeded to put an absolute whooping on the Boilermakers beating them by 16 points. The Huskers shot an astounding 14 of 23 (60%) from behind the arc. They could not miss. Fan favorite, Keisei Tominaga shot 5 of 9 from behind the arc, ending with a game-high 19 points.
The energetic Nebraska crowd stormed the court after the win, as they should. The Cornhusker faithful came ready and had tremendous energy all night long, it was truly felt through the screen. Now, having a massive high like that has to eventually come down and I think that happens Friday night in Iowa City at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

The storyline could not have had a better setup, the Hawkeyes are one of those teams that play significantly better at home. They shoot significantly better in Carver Arena, while Nebraska is the same way, they love playing at home. Who doesn’t?
Iowa at home is 37th in the country in offensive adjusted efficiency, according to Bart Torvik. They protect the ball extremely well, they force a lot of turnovers for a team that does not play a lick of defense.
Only one loss at home so far this season coming against Michigan on December 10th. Outside of that loss in their 8 home games, they have outscored their opponents by an average of 21.5 points per game.
Nebraska is just like Iowa, good at home and completely different on the road. Nothing comes close to the way they shot the ball on Tuesday from deep. In the Cornhuskers’ three true road games this season their best game from behind the arc was 31.5%, which came in their 88-72 loss to Wisconsin on January 6th.
Nebraska’s road offensive statistics are kind of gross, overall they are the 28th team in the country in offensive-adjusted efficiency, according to Bart Torvik’s ratings. However, in road games this season they are 151st in offensive-adjusted efficiency, 300th in turnover percentage, and 5th worst in free throw rate.
Being a drastically different team on the road could be an issue. In a big letdown spot after Tuesday’s win, now heading into Iowa where fans will ready to go berserk. Will the Cornhuskers be ready to go? Or will they have a slight hangover from their gargantuan victory?
Friday night in Iowa City should have an incredible atmosphere. Grab some popcorn, it is going to be a movie. Or whatever the kids are saying these days.
Prediction: Iowa wins and covers the spread
Concerns: Nebraska has another insane night shooting the rock, while Iowa’s offense is nonexistent.
Nonetheless, I live and die fading storms. If you have a system live it, trust it, die by it. Let’s roll in the weekend with a win.
