NCAA Basketball Transfer Portal – Who Went Where?

Haggerty will make an immediate impact for the Wildcats

PJ Haggerty signed with Kansas State this offseason

It’s the Wild West when it comes to the transfer portal, and plenty of players will represent new teams next season. While some players may follow their coach to a new school, others are simply looking for more playing time, a step up from mid-major to high major, or are chasing the biggest NIL check. Regardless, let’s familiarize ourselves with where some of the biggest names ended up.

Top NCAA Basketball Transfers

Yaxel Lendeborg – UAB to Michigan

The 6’9″ power forward was ready for the jump to high major basketball. Last season for the Blazers, Lendeborg averaged a double-double with 17.7 points and 11.4 rebounds, while adding 4.2 assists and 1.8 blocks as well. The senior shot 36% from deep, 76% from the stripe, and 52.2% overall. He’ll be a great replacement in the Wolverine’s front court as Danny Wolf and Vladislov Goldin move on.

PJ Haggerty – Memphis to Kansas State

Jerome Tang loves the portal, and he might’ve had the steal of the offseason. Or we could be looking at a Coleman Hawkins 2.0. Either way, Haggerty has some huge expectations heading to Manhattan.

Haggerty will be at his fourth school in four years with previous stops at TCU, Tulsa, and Memphis. He’s averaged over 21 points in two straight seasons, leading both rosters he represented. Last year with the Tigers, he added 5.8 boards and 3.7 assists, along with 1.8 steals. Haggerty didn’t leave points at the stripe, shooting 81.8% from the free-throw line and over 36% from beyond the arc. He will be the go-to guy immediately amongst a very improved Wildcats team.

Bennett Stirtz makes the jump to high major basketball in the Big Ten

Bennett Stirtz continues to follow his Head Coach, Ben McCollum. Next stop: Iowa City!

Bennett Stirtz – Drake to Iowa

I’ve got a soft spot for this guy. Not only did he beat up on my alma mater at the Division II level, but he’s stuck with his coach and proven hard work pays off. Drake surprised the nation last year as new head coach Ben McCollum and junior transfer Stirtz led the Bulldogs to a 31-4 record in their first year since coming from D-II Northwest Missouri State. They also had a huge upset in the Big Dance.

Stirtz specifically led Drake in three categories, with 19.2 points per game, 5.7 assists, and 2.1 steals. He also added 4.3 boards, shooting 49.8% from the field, 79.4% from the stripe, and 39.5% from deep. Stirtz did all this while playing 39.3 minutes per game, with just two turnovers in each contest. He followed McCollum to Iowa where he should be ready to compete at the next level.

Donovan Dent – New Mexico to UCLA

Mick Cronin got a pure scorer, something he hasn’t had since Johnny Juzang was tearing up PAC-12 defenses. Dent spent the last three years with the Lobos, leading them in assists per game in two straight seasons, while also leading them in scoring last year with 20.4 points per game. Adding 6.4 assists, 2.3 boards, 1.4 steals, all while playing over 35 minutes, this guy will be a firework show compared to the Bruins’ mundane offense last season.

Boogie Fland – Arkansas to Florida

Todd Golden lost some guards and immediately reloaded. Not only did he land Fland, but the defending National Champions also signed Xavian Lee of Princeton (No. 29 transfer) and AJ Brown of Ohio (No. 66 transfer). The freshman only played 21 games for the Razorbacks last season, but he contributed 13.5 points, 5.1 assists, and 3.2 rebounds in those contests. Fland and company have the Gators’ guards reloaded for next season.

Two teams not mentioned in this article are on top of the odds board and for good reason. Houston is coming off a National Championship appearance and are returning plenty. Milos Uzan has announced he will return, bringing back 11.4 points, 4.3 assists, and 3.1 boards, while shooting nearly 43% from deep. They’ve only lost Terrance Arceneaux, who committed to Will Wade at NC State, while there is still hope Ja’Vier Francis returns. Emanuel Sharp and Joseph Tugler also return for the Cougars.

As for Matt Painter and Purdue, they return tons of experience. Braden Smith, Trey Kaufman-Renn, and Fletcher Loyer are all coming back. Those three combined for 49.7 points, 13.1 boards, and 12.7 assists. All three shot at least 38% from deep with Kaufman-Renn and Loyer shooting north of 42%. The Boilermakers signed 6’11” center Oscar Cluff (South Dakota State) and 6’7″ power forward Liam Murphy (North Florida) this offseason to boost their frontcourt. Watch out for Purdue this year in College Hoops.
