Super Tuesday has arrived and we have an intriguing matchup in the South Loop of Chicago, as DePaul hosts Morgan State. DePaul is coming off a close call in its last game, while Morgan State is searching for its first true win of the season. Let us dive into this one.

No Bias, Ever

This two-time DePaul alum will have his boots on the ground this evening at Wintrust Arena. There is no better way to enjoy the game than to have a little coinage on it. For those thinking, here comes a bias sell job on why DePaul is going to cover the 23.5 point spread, you think I enjoy losing. Have you watched this DePaul team since its win over Georgia Tech? The Blue Demons nearly blew it against Arkansas Pine Bluff. They are lifeless. They are not taking these bad teams seriously and it has bitten them on the rear end. Their first loss of the season came against then No. 343 Buffalo. The Bulls have since moved up to 260, per Bart Torvik. That is still a game you do not drop on your home court this early.

Morgan State is still a very bad team, ranked 359 out of 365, per Bart Torvik. They are bottom 25 in offense and defense. They do, however, offer a few bright spots for a team this low. The Bears are top 100 in free throw rate and turnover rate offense. They are also top 200 in turnover rate defense, free throw rate offense and three point defense. Morgan State likes to run, sitting at 68th in pace, according to Haslametrics. They are going to force this more middle of the pack DePaul team to play faster. Even on the road, I expect the Bears to dictate the pace.

Even though the Bears have only won one game this season, and it came against Central Penn, a non-Division One team, DePaul will be their highest ranked opponent. I expect them to walk into Wintrust hungry. For DePaul, this will be the second worst team they have faced this season. The worst was Chris Holtmanns former program, Gardner-Webb, a game that ended 93 to 62.

Is the Spread too Big?

As mentioned earlier, the Blue Demons have played down to their weak competition during non-conference play. That is all they have seen this season, nothing but bad teams. They have played the 15th easiest schedule so far. DePaul has been favored by at least 15 points in six games and has covered only two of those spreads. Those two games were the only matchups they have won by more than tonight’s number.

To make matters worse, DePaul will likely be looking ahead to its first true road game of the season on Saturday. The Blue Demons travel to Wichita to face the Shockers. With this being one of the bigger games of the year for Morgan State, paired with a look ahead spot for DePaul and the constant theme of playing down to weak competition, I have to be on Morgan State +23.5 this evening.
