The Players Era Festival continues and two top 25 teams who both won yesterday meet on the court tonight. The No. 7 ranked Michigan Wolverines demolished the San Diego State Aztecs, winning by 40 points (despite the point differential capping at 20). They go up against the No. 21 ranked Auburn Tigers of the SEC, who took down the Oregon Ducks by 11 in their matchup. Both teams are scoring over 90 points per game this year, winning by an average of 22 points. But who will move on and put themselves in a position to make the Championship Game on Wednesday? Let’s find out with our favorite picks.

#7 Michigan Wolverines vs. #21 Auburn Tigers NCAA Basketball Insights

Tahaad Pettiford and the Tigers face a top 10 Michigan team tonight in Las Vegas
Michigan absolutely annihilated the Aztecs. I for one was expecting it to be much closer. But maybe we’ve been waiting for this Michigan breakout game. They are 5-0 and have only faced teams ranked within the top 166, including three top 75 wins. Sure, they struggled against Wake Forest and TCU, but Dusty May’s team has handled business elsewhere. They aren’t afraid to run and they have multiple scoring options, plus their front court is massive.
Auburn had four cupcake wins and a loss to Houston on their record going into last night’s games. Their wins came over teams ranking 194 to 275, before beating the No. 39 Oregon Ducks last night (Ratings from Bart Torvik). They also like to get up and down the floor plenty, and have the offense to keep up. But I’m not sure they have the bodies to contain Michigan’s big boys.

The Wolverines’ front court includes 7’3″ center Aday Mara of Spain who is basically averaging a double double (10.6 points, 9.8 boards and 3 blocks), 6’9″ 250 pound power forward Morez Johnson Jr. (Illinois transfer) and 6’9″ 240 pound UAB transfer Yaxel Lendeborg (No. 1 player in the portal this offseason).
Johnson and Lendeborg combined for 28.2 points, 14.6 rebounds and four assists, adding a couple blocks as well. All three of those bigs shoot over 60.5% from the field. How will Auburn slow that down?

I am excited to watch the point guard matchup between these teams. Tahaad Pettiford is a do-it-all ball handler who will take over and score when his team needs it. Elliot Cadaeu is more of a true point, looking to pass the rock and rarely shooting from long range, although he is shooting 40% from deep this year (8/20). Those two going head to head will be great, but the front court will determine the outcome of the game.
Auburn’s front court is 6’9″ KeShawn Murphy (who will be tasked with guarding Mara who stand six inches taller), Keyshawn Hall, who will be tasked with guarding Lendeborg, leaving freshmen Sebastian Williams-Adams and Filip Jović to handle Johnson. The Wolverines forward has 20 pounds on both of those guys, and I see him having a huge game.
This line is already ticking up from the -3.5 opener, and I’d take it up to -6.5. Michigan should win this game by double digits based on their size alone. Michigan is third in defensive efficiency and No. 9 in eFG% defense. The Tigers won’t be able to keep up on either end of the floor.
