Best Bet: Clemson/BYU Under 151 (-107) BetOnline

Let’s back the under tonight in Madison Square Garden. Both teams will be playing in an unfamiliar gym, and Clemson should know they are WAY outmanned on pure talent. The only shot they have at covering this 5.5 point spread (or winning outright) is keeping this game low scoring. But they have the tools to do so.

Clemson already runs really slow. They rank No. 300 in pace this year, and have a top 35 defense to show for it. The Tigers rank No. 38 in adjusted defensive efficiency, No. 30 in eFG% defense, and No. 22 in offensive rebounds allowed. They are also top 25 in 3P% defense, which will certainly come into play against the sharpshooting Cougars. Sure, BYU will try and run, but Clemson has the ability to slow this game down and go at their speed. Clemson also takes great care of the basketball (No. 7 in the country) meaning they should milk the shot clock and get a look each time down the floor.

BYU is much faster, but aren’t terribly quick. They rank No. 135 in pace according to Bart Torvik, and despite a great offense, they struggle to get to the line. The Cougars are north of 260 in terms of FT Rate offense, but they make up for it on the defensive end, ranking top 50 in that category on that side of the ball. There shouldn’t be too many free throws in this contest.

Ultimately, Clemson will keep this pace slow, but I do think BYU finds a way to overpower them for a win.

Back the Wolverines to put up a billion points with me tonight. For starters, they have scored 100 points in each of their past three wins, putting up triple digits on Auburn, Gonzaga and Rutgers. They are able to do this because of how quick they play, how well they shoot, and the fact that they are lethal from beyond the arc.

Michigan ranks top 25 in pace this season, ranking top 10 in adjusted offensive efficiency and eFG%. From beyond the arc, this team is top 100 in 3P Rate and 3P%, shooting from deep 44% of the time, and doing so at a 37.3% clip as a team. Defensively, they are incredibly good, and I see them covering this spread.

Villanova will try to slow things down, given their style of play and the fact that they are outmatched, but it won’t matter. Michigan is going to play their game and light it up from downtown in their own gym. The Wildcats are third worst in 3P% defense this year, allowing teams to shoot over 42.5% from deep. This could get very ugly for the visitors, who don’t have the defense to slow down their hosts.

Villanova ranks north of 200 in eFG% defense and gives up plenty of offensive boards. The Wolverines will take advantage for a ton of easy points tonight at home.
