The PAC-12 certainly isn’t what it used to be, but we get a bit of nostalgia late on Friday night as a top 15 showdown happens out west. The No. 15 UCLA Bruins welcome the No. 5 Arizona Wildcats into the City of Angels, although this is technically a neutral site game. Can Mick Cronin’s team stay perfect as a small underdog against Tommy Lloyd’s exciting squad? Find out with our favorite picks below.

#5 Arizona Wildcats vs. #15 UCLA Bruins NCAA Basketball Insights

Donovan Dent leads the Bruins with 16.5 points per game and 6.5 assists
The Wildcats have already been battle tested (and traveled), as they took down the defending national champion No. 3 Florida Gators in Sin City to start the season. After that hard fought win, the Wildcats beat Utah Tech and Northern Arizona at home, allowing just 58 points per game in those two while scoring 88.5 of their own.
As for UCLA, they are 3-0, but that didn’t come easy. They beat Eastern Washington by just six, Pepperdine by 11 and then West Georgia by 21, failing to cover the spread in every game. All three were at home, and although this game is in Los Angeles, the Bruins won’t have the comfort of Pauley Pavilion. Do they have what it takes to pull off this upset?

The Wildcats are a team that loves to push the pace and run. They’ve averaged 75 possessions per game so far this season, ranking top 30 in pace according to Haslametrics. While UCLA is plenty slow, I don’t think they have the skillset to slow down Arizona. Plus the Eagles of EWU, a top 100 paced team, were able to stretch the Bruins for over 70 possessions.

Sure the home team controls the pace of play, but even though it’s in LA, this isn’t a home game for the Bruins. Expect a 50/50 crowd and for the Wildcats to turn this into a track meet. They absolutely love to run, and I see them daring their opponents to keep up on offense, which I doubt they are capable of.
Donovan Dent sat out against West Georgia, but he is going to be on the court. Sure that helps the Bruins’ offense, but this is going to be their first real test and first time traveling (even if it’s just 15 miles; you know that’s at least 90 minutes with LA traffic). You could certainly argue that Arizona is looking ahead to facing UConn on the road next Wednesday, but I am choosing to ignore that fact completely. Ignorance is bliss.
However I do think the Wildcats come focused since this will feel like an old school rivalry game (even if Koa Peat was born after the death of the PAC-12). There’s always been question marks surrounding Arizona’s defense, but I believe they are better this year, plus they’ve proven they can outscore anyone (93 vs. the Gators). Give me Arizona to prove to everyone (and myself) that they can finally be a national championship contender this season with a good win.
