#17 Tennessee vs. #3 Houston Best Bet
We roll on with another gift from the college basketball gods, as we get ready for this afternoon matchup. No. 3 Houston takes on No. 17 Tennessee in the Players Era Festival. Both teams are coming off wins in their first games of the event. Tennessee gave Rutgers the beatdown of a lifetime, winning 85 to 60. Syracuse kept things tight for two halves and an extra five against Houston, but the Cougars closed it out 78 to 74 in overtime.
Line Movement
The line opened at 3.5 in favor of Houston and has not moved. The total opened at 134.5 and has climbed to 135.5 on some books. BetOnline is hanging 133.5 and I still support that under. I grabbed 134.5 at the open. I have leaned toward the under from the moment this matchup was announced.
Tempo and Defense
It is hard not to, given how these teams prefer to stroll through possessions like they have nowhere to be. Haslametrics has both squads in the bottom 50 nationally in pace. Houston is the fourth slowest team in the country. Two extremely slow teams, who also sit inside the top five in adjusted defensive efficiency, will meet this evening.
Another important note, Houston has struggled to force fouls and get to the line. Early in the season they rank dead last in free throw rate offense. Tennessee has been solid at avoiding fouls, sitting 128th in free throw rate defense.
This will also be Tennessee’s first opponent inside the top 100. Haslametrics lists Tennessee with the 35th easiest schedule through six games. Houston has faced the 198th toughest. Nothing special on either side, but the Cougars have already played two teams inside the top 55. It will be interesting to see how well the Volunteers perform in their first true test of the season.
I do not have a strong lean on the side, but I do not expect a high scoring finish. It should be competitive. It is not March, so siding with a Rick Barnes team in November might be the right call, but the under remains my preferred look.
This matchup sets up as a grind that will test both teams on every possession. Houston brings its usual discipline and toughness, while Tennessee finally gets a real measuring stick after a soft early schedule. Both defenses should dictate the rhythm, and the slow pace points directly toward another low scoring battle. I respect both sides, but the under remains the clearest path. This game should deliver a hard fought finish.
