#14 Arkansas vs. #22 Michigan State Best Bet
Welcome in to the first college basketball Saturday of the season. We are getting absolutely spoiled with high-quality hoops and football matchups. One of the best games on the board may be #14 Arkansas at #22 Michigan State. East Lansing is going to be banana lands for this early-season showdown.
Both teams enter fresh off opening wins. The Razorbacks handled Southern 109-77, while the Spartans took care of Colgate 80-69. So, who starts the season 2-0? Let us dive into this poetic matchup.
The Spartans opened as a short favorite over the Razorbacks, with the total sitting at 155.5, high for a typical Michigan State game. I lean toward the under, given how Tom Izzo teams tend to play: slow-paced with disciplined, effective defense. Still, my official play is Michigan State on the moneyline at $1.25.
March Came Early
One thing about me, I love coaches who are never satisfied. Tom Izzo is one of the greatest to ever coach this game, and he was furious with his group after their 80-69 win over Colgate. Michigan State entered as a 22.5-point favorite and only won by 11.
The Spartans probably should have lost. Their saving grace was getting to the free-throw line, where they shot 37 attempts to Colgate’s eight. The Raiders actually posted better field goal and three-point percentages than Michigan State.
Tom Izzo: “I’m not panicking. I’m mad. We have some upperclassmen that need to be playing better. When it is your time to shine here as an upperclassmen, you have to. Don’t think tonight I won’t look in the mirror and ask myself (how I have been coaching them).”

Arkansas is coming off a 109-point outburst, but I believe Michigan State’s slower, methodical defense will disrupt their rhythm. Both Southern and Arkansas rank inside the top 85 nationally in pace, while the Spartans play at a tempo more than 100 spots slower. Add in Izzo’s frustration after Monday’s performance, and I expect a sharper, more disciplined showing from his team today. I am fully buying into the “bad news” that came out of his postgame comments, because when Izzo is upset, his teams usually respond.
At the end of the day, this matchup feels like a tone-setter for both programs. Arkansas wants to prove it can win on the road against a tough, disciplined Big Ten opponent, while Michigan State is looking to remind everyone why Izzo-led teams are always dangerous. Expect the Spartans to control tempo and force Arkansas out of their comfort zone. The crowd in East Lansing will be rocking, and I think that energy carries Michigan State over the finish line. This is the type of early-season test that builds character, and Izzo’s team thrives on that.
Give me Michigan State to win at $1.25! Go Sparty!
