#13 Illinois vs. Ohio State Best Bet
One of the biggest games of the day is on deck. Fresh off a win over Tennessee, No. 13 Illinois heads to Columbus to take on the Ohio State Buckeyes in their first Big Ten matchup of the season. Will the Buckeyes hang tough as short home underdogs, or will Illinois walk right past them, Let us get into it.
The Angle That Stands Out
I initially leaned toward the Buckeyes, but the deeper I looked into this matchup the more a different angle stood out. For the first time this season, I am diving into the player props market. I like Ohio State here, but I want a little more cushion than the spread. Buckeyes leading scorer and veteran guard Bruce Thornton over 17.5 points feels like the right move. If Ohio State finds itself playing from behind, Thornton will be forced to stay aggressive and stay on the floor.
The senior guard has been outstanding for Ohio State this season, averaging 20.1 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 4.3 assists per game. Interestingly enough, Thornton has scored at least 17 points in every game in which he has played over 30 minutes except one. That is a six game sample. The only miss came in a 22 point win over App State where he finished with 13. Through six home games, he is averaging 21 points per game. Thornton has averaged 4.5 three point attempts and 11.1 field goal attempts per game this season. I expect numbers in that range again this evening, possibly higher if the Buckeyes fall behind.
In Illinois last three top 30 matchups, opposing top scoring guards have averaged 18.0 points per game. Only one guard in that Alabama, UConn, Tennessee stretch went over 17.5, and that was Alabama guard Labaron Philon who dropped 24 at the United Center.
Ohio State has been the number one interior scoring team in the country so far, and the Buckeyes sit inside the top 75 in three point percentage. They take a healthy amount of threes as well, ranked 102nd in three point rate. Illinois has shown some vulnerability defending the deep ball in its three games away from home. The Fighting Illini defend the paint well, but I still expect Ohio State to generate quality looks around the rim.
Trust the Veteran!
This is also Thornton’s fourth season as a starter, and he has been in plenty of moments like this. He knows how to manage the pace, attack mismatches, and bring his teammates with him. In a game of this magnitude, I expect Thornton to push toward at least 20.
Best Bet: Bruce Thornton Over 17.5 Points (-114) on BetOnline
