None of it matters because the Players Era Championship takes center stage tonight, and the matchup is incredible. No. 12 Gonzaga, one of the most well rounded teams in the country, squares off with No. 7 Michigan, which has climbed to the top of Bart Torvik’s rankings at number 1. Spoiled feels like an understatement, and I hope we get pure chaos.

This matchup opened with the Bulldogs as a short favorite. The total opened at 160.5 and moved up to 161.5. I took the over in this spot. The speed and depth from both sides should push this into a high scoring game. I also feel this number could be a little low. These kids are playing for prize money, and that urgency matters.

Turkey Trot Speed

Haslametrics has both teams inside the top 35 in pace. Each has averaged well over 90 points per game this season. Gonzaga’s last three games have gone over, with the defense allowing 65 points. Michigan has seen only one of its last three games go over, and the Wolverines are allowing 62 points.

Even with how strong these defenses are, I think there will be enough possessions to give us a real chance. Michigan has dealt with one of the toughest schedules so far. Against four top 100 opponents they are allowing 68 points per game. Gonzaga against top 100 teams is allowing nearly 70 points. I can easily see both teams reaching 80. These will be the best offenses either defense has faced this season.

Both teams will look to attack the paint, since neither leans heavily on the three. That can lead to fouls, and more whistles increase the odds that this over soars. Michigan is the number 1 team in the country at defending the interior, but I think Gonzaga’s veteran experience will help them throughout the night. Neither team truly gets to the line a lot, but I can see this game getting scrappy.

I am trying not to overthink this matchup and stick to what I know. The number keeps climbing, but I still think both teams can reach 80 without much trouble. The pace, the talent, and the way these offenses attack should give us constant pressure on the scoreboard. Add the prize money sitting in the back of every players mind and this has the look of a game that turns into pure chaos. I just want points, pace, and fireworks. I think we get all of it tonight.
