Timberwolves vs. Thunder | Game 3 Recap

Result: Timberwolves (143) – Thunder (101)

The Western Conference Finals have been nothing but one sided. The Thunder blew the doors off the Timberwolves in Games 1 and 2, but it was the Timberwolves whom walked away with the 40-point win in Game 3. Minnesota came to play and it started from the very top.

Anthony Edwards looked possessed, outscoring the entire Thunder team in the opening quarter, 16-14. The Timberwolves lead by 20 points after 12-minutes and went into the half with a 31-point lead.

Oklahoma City simply had no answer for Antman, he finished with 30 points in just 3-quarters of game time; shooting 71% from the field and hitting 5 3s in the process. Julius Randle responded to his benching Game 2, scoring 24 points in just 30 minutes of game time and shooting 60% from the field.

Spin the Block

Oklahoma City got a taste of their own medicine in Game 3. The Thunder shot 44 3s, 41 of those being open/wide-open shots, still shooting just 32% from beyond the arc. The Thunder haven’t been a great 3-point shooting team in the postseason, ranking bottom-3 among all playoff teams in 3-point percentage.

Oklahoma City is shooting 32.4% from 3 in the postseason, 5% lower than their regular season average of 37.4%. The Thunder’s 3-point percentage drops even further when away from Oklahoma City, shooting just 27.4% in their 6-road games.

Oklahoma City took just 21 and 33 3-point attempts in their two wins of the series, but 44 in their lone loss. Minnesota may have figured something out with how they defend the Thunder and tonight I’m expecting that exact same approach. Open 3s are fun when they go in the hoop, not so much when your team’s struggling.

Our Best Bets in Game 4 of the Western Conference Finals

Jalen Williams o1.5 3s (-113 via BetOnline)

Shai and JDub

Like I said above, the Timberwolves made some changes defensively in Game 3. Making Oklahoma City take more 3s than they’d like is something we’ve seen this same Thunder team to do others all year. The Thunder rank bottom-5 in wide-open 3-point attempts allowed and teams have just struggled to hit their shots.

That very strategy was used against the Thunder in Game 3, they shot more 3s than normal, shot terribly and ended up losing the game by 41-points. The Thunder aren’t a team you can count on to continue to miss open shots, especially this guy; Jalen Williams.

Williams has hit this line in 2 of the 3 games so far, shooting 2/5 in Game 3; playing just 25 minutes in the blowout. He’s also cleared this line in 7 of his L10 road games and he shot 37% from 3 on the road this season.

Williams has become the Thunder’s 2nd best player and they’ll need him to step up here in Game 4.

Jaden McDaniels o20.5 PRA (-110 via BetOnline)

Jaden McDaniels dunks it home

Jaden McDaniels picked up 6 fouls in just 23 minutes of game time in the series opener. Mainly due to being the primarry defender on Shai, but also due to some terrible officiating. In Game 2, he responded with 22 points and shot above 50% from the field. In Game 3, he shot 33% from the field and finished a bucket shy of cashing this line.

I’ve said McDaniels should play a ton of minutes in this series, but between both foul trouble and blowouts; it’s been a little tough. He’s played 37, 40, and 43 minutes in his last 3 matchups with Oklahoma City prior to the postseason; and played 35 minutes in Game 2. He’s averaging 36 MPG so far in the postseason, sitting behind only Antman (39 MPG) and Julius Randle (38 MPG).

McDaniels is the Timberwolves best defensive option for Shai and I’m going right back to him in Game 4.
