Thunder vs. Kings | Analysis

Dennis Schröder

Still Perfect

The Defending Champs are in the Sacremento and still remain perfect on the year. Even with Jalen William and Isaiah Joe still waiting to make their season debut, the Thunder have fought their way to a 4-0 start, already having played in two double overtime games. Oklahoma City’s earning every win this year the hard way and tonight in Sacremento they’ll be down another big piece, Chet Holmgren.

Chet was ruled out with back soreness and both JDub and Joe remain sidelined. The Thunder will be looking to their young roster to help fill the gaps and get them a win tonight here in Sacremento. They’ll need to lean on their MVP just a little bit more tonight but Shai looks more than ready to handle the responsibility.

Through four games this year, Shai’s averaging 35.8 points, 5.5 rebounds and 5.8 assists per game. He’s shooting 51% from the field and getting to the line for 11.5 free throw attempts per game. Shai looks just as good as he did last year and this entire rosters’ showing no signs of a championship hangover.

Who’s a Sacremento King?!

The Sacremento Kings in their current form are one of the weirdest NBA rosters of recent memory. Demar Derozan signed with the Kings back when De’Aaron Fox and Domantas Sabonis were making the playoffs and lighting the beam at least 25 times a year. Now Fox is in San Antonio, Zack Lavine made his way to Sacremento and Russell Westbrook is coming off the bench.

Dennis Schröder is now this team’s starting PG and we’ve got both Malik Monk and Russ coming off the bench. This team feels funny and their 1-2 start kind of shows that. Sacremento’s lone win came against the Utah Jazz in a game which both teams struggled to put the ball in the basket.

Zach Lavine leads the Kings in usage, seeing a 28.3% usage rate and scoring 35.6% of the team’s points through three games. He’s scored 30+ points in all three games and is averaging 31.0 on shooting splits of 53/34/93.

Tonight he’ll see one of his toughest matchups of the year in Lu Dort and I’m interested to see who steps up for this Kings team.

Cason Wallace o16.5 PRA (-120) | BetOnline

Cason Wallace

With all the names the Thunder have out tonight, we’re going to the 10th overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft; Cason Wallace. Wallace has played in three of the Thunder’s four games so far this year, playing 30+ minutes in two of the three and starting all three games.

Wallace came out firing in the season opener against Houston, recording 14 points, 7 rebounds, 5 assists and 4 steals. His defensive prowess is another reason the Thunder love this kid, he plays with high intensity and high motor at almost all times. In his last two games he’s shot a combined 3/16 from the field and scored just seven total points.

In those same two games, he’s had a combined eight rebounds, eight assists and a FIVE blocks/steals. His shooting definitely leaves something to be desired but his volume is something that just can’t be ignored. He’s had 16 shot attempts over his last two games and tonight the Thunder will be down two members of their big three; with both Chet and JDub in street clothes.

Wallace is a fierce defender and should provide a ton of opportunities in transition for his team tonight. Tonight’s matchup with Sacremento feels like a great spot for Wallace to get right.

Austin Reaves finished with 71 PRA against this team, Grayson Allen 30 and Devin Booker with 39. If we take a look at PGs against the Kings; Marcus Smart with 19, Walter Clayton 18 and Keyonte George finished with 30.

They haven’t been able to contain opposing back courts and I don’t see that changing tonight.
