2024/25 NBA Awards, Predictions & Best Bets: Who's Winning Most Improved?

Tyrese Maxey Under 3.5 3-Pointers (-130)

In the midst of a three-game win streak, the Philadelphia 76ers will host the Los Angeles Lakers at Xfinity Mobile Arena this Sunday evening at 7:30 p.m. ET. Sportsbooks have Philly listed anywhere from -3.5 to -4, with the total sitting around 233.5.

While everyone zigs and takes Maxey’s overs – especially in a marquee matchup like this – I’m going to zag and bet him to stay under 3.5 made threes.

Maxey spreads out his shot selection fairly evenly, though he does lean slightly more toward attempts from beyond the arc compared to mid-range or at the rim. Thirty-seven percent of his shots come from deep, which is actually a small dip from last season when he was taking 40%. He has been steady from distance, though, connecting on 38% of those attempts.

The Lakers are bottom-tier defending the three, but they also struggle at the rim – and they’re poor in transition, ranking 24th in transition points added per 100 possessions. There’s no question Maxey will get a healthy volume of looks from deep, but I also think he’ll have a clearer path than usual to attack the rim in this matchup.

And with the higher stakes of a primetime meeting like this, I expect a slight bump in the Lakers’ defensive intensity overall, meaning I expect their perimeter defensive efforts to look a bit better. Let’s bank on Maxey staying under 3.5 made three-pointers this evening.

Austin Reaves Over 4.5 rebounds (+115)

We’ll target an over with our next prop. I’m betting Austin Reaves to snag at least five rebounds tonight. He’s averaging 5.5 boards per game on the season, yet we’re getting a plus-money price on him to go over 4.5. Maybe that’s because he’s dipped to four per game over his last three outings, which could be tied to LeBron James being back in the lineup.

Regardless, I still view this as a strong value play, and there should be plenty of rebounding opportunities for Reaves. The intensity of this matchup should be dialed up, which typically leads to stronger defense and more missed shots. Let’s buy the dip on Reaves’ rebounding production against a 76ers team that sits middle of the pack on the glass.
