Magic vs. Hawks | Analysis
New Team, Who This?
The Atlanta Hawks came into the year with a very different looking roster. In the offseason they made big additions like Kristaps Porziņģis, Nickeil Alexander-Walker and few more role players to fill out the team. Atlanta’s out to a 3-4 start this year and Trae Young’s unfortunately already on the shelf for an extended period.
Trae sprained his MCL in their game against the Nets, luckily avoiding any serious structural damage. The team’s said Young will be out at least four weeks and will be re-evaluated closer to that time. It’s not what you want, but this Hawks team has the pieces to keep things interesting while he recovers.
Porziņģis has started the year averaging 18.2 points per game and adding in 7.0 rebounds to boot. Alexander-Walker’s averaging 16.9 points per game this year with the increased usage he’s seeing and guys like Jalen Johnson and Dyson Daniels have shown an ability to elevate their play in the absence of their point guard.
Dark Magician(s)
The Orlando Magic this year have not looked the same, especially defensively. The team’s playing at a top five pace in the NBA right now but they’re just 22nd in offensive rating. The team ranks 15th in points scored but has once again struggled from beyond the arc. The Magic rank 21st in 3-point percentage, despite the addition of Desmond Bane and improved shooting from Franz Wagner.
This team’s still figuring some things out and that’s to be expected when you make a big name addition in the offseason like Bane. Bane’s struggled so far in Orlando, averaging just 14.6 points per game and shooting 41.9% from the field and 25.9% from deep. Bane was brought in to give the Magic another scoring option and a reliable threat from deep; he’s done neither of those things so far.

Jalen Johnson o14.5 A/R (-105) | BetOnline

Johnson’s averaging 21.2 points per game this year, shooting 58.4% from the field and he’s seeing a career high usage rate at 24.3%. In addition to the 21 points, Johnson’s averaging 9.0 rebounds and 5.0 assists per game. He’s shown he’s more than capable of have the offense run through him and it’s why we’re looking at his assists/rebounds today.
In two games without Young last year, Johnson cleared this line in all both games, averaging 11.5 rebounds and 9.0 assists per game. In two games without Trae this year, Johnson’s cleared this line in both games; finishing with 13 rebounds in both contests and 13 total assists across the two games.
Johnson’s cleared this line in six of his last eight games without Trae, averaging 11.6 rebounds and 6.6 assists per game. With Trae still on the self I’m expecting Atlanta to run their offense through the big man today against Orlando.
Last year Orlando’s defense was one of the best, this year they rank 20th in opponent field goal percentage and 21st in opponent three point percentage. The addition of Desmond Bane has also really helped speed up this Orlando offense. They rank 5th in pace this year and it’s resulted in more possessions for their opponents.
Orlando’s 5th in pace this year, but 22nd in offensive rating. They’re 15th in points, 12th in field goal percentage and 21st in 3-point percentage. That means more possessions, more missed shots and hopefully more rebound/assist opportunities for Johnson. He’s averaging 10 potential assists per game this year in addition to 14.3 rebound chances. In his last two, those numbers jump to 10.5 potential assists and 19.5 rebound chances per game.

Franz Wagner o21.5 Points (-110) | BetOnline

Franz has come into this season looking the best he’s ever looked. Coming off a Gold Medal win at EuroBasket, Franz is averaging 22.6 points per game and shooting 50.9% from the field and 43.3% from beyond the arc. He’s taking on more of the scoring responsibility and team’s don’t seem to have answer for the 24 year old German.
Wagner’s seeing a 23.3% usage rate this year and scoring 26.7% of the team’s points. He’s cleared this line in five of his seven games this year and four of his last give against the Hawks. Last year in three games against the Hawks, Franz averaged 28.0 points, 6.7 rebounds and 4.7 assists per game; all while shooting 48% from the field.
Orlando’s also playing at a top five pace this year, meaning more scoring opportunities for and more opportunities in transition.
