Familiar Territory
It feels almost too familiar at this point, Jimmy Butler once again finds himself in the NBA’s Play-in Tournament. Despite winning 16 of his L20 games with the Warriors, Jimmy finds himself right back in the same place he was last year; this time with Stephen Curry as his running mate.
The Warriors are no strangers to the play-in tournament, looking at their 4th play-in game in franchise history; still searching for their first win. Last year it was Mike Brown and his Kings squad that got the better of Golden State. Klay Thompson would go 0/10 in his last game as a Warrior and the Dubs faded into the offseason.
This year’s team looks completely different. The front office added Jimmy Butler at the deadline, immediately signed him to a 3-year extension and won 23 of 30 games with Jimmy in the lineup. Now they’ve got their eyes set on the postseason and tonight it’s win and you’re in.
Bombs Away
The Memphis Grizzlies have gone 12-16 since the All-Star Break, allowing 118.9 PPG and losing 9 of their L15 games. The Grizzlies fired their head coach with just 9-games left in the regular season, something we’d never seen before (pre-Michael Malone). Memphis won just 4 of those remaining 9-games, slipping to 8th in the conference.
Tonight they’ll face a Warriors squad they’ve got some history against. It was the Grizz that handed Steph and the Warriors their first loss in the play-in tournament, all the way back in 2021.
In the year following; the two teams met in the first round, with the Warriors finishing the Grizz in 6-games that year. Steph averaged 26.0 PPG in that series, taking an average of 20 shot attempts per game.
Tonight’s matchup represents the latest iteration of this Grizzlies/Warriors rivalry, neither team likes the other and neither team wants to play another play-in game.

Stephen Curry o28.5 Points (-105 via BetOnline)
Stephen Curry is 0-3 in the NBA’s Play-In Tournament and it’s by no fault of his own. Curry’s averaged 32.7 PPG in the play-in games, shooting 49% from the field and an astounding 48% from beyond the arc.
Steph’s recorded 37 or more points in 2 of the 3 games, recording just 22 points last year, despite shooting 50% from the field. He played 36 minutes in a 24-point loss to the Sacremento Kings, took 16 shots and really did everything he could to help his team win. Klay, Kuminga, and Wiggins combined to make just 10 of their 36 shot attempts; leading to the Warriors getting blown out.
This year the front office decided they’d had enough. They traded for Jimmy Butler in late February and the team’s come alive since then. Winning 23 of the 30-games Jimmy played, he helped elevate the game of everyone around him; especially Steph.
The addition of Jimmy helped alleviate some pressure and opened up the offense for Curry. With Jimmy in the lineup, Curry’s averaging 27.2 PPG on 47% from the field and 41% from beyond the arc; all significant jumps from his regular season averages (24.5 PPG ; 45%/39%).
Tonight’s game represents a very rare and very new situation for NBA players; win and you’re in. It’s that simple.
Look for rotations to tighten up, minutes
Ja Morant o26.5 Points (-115 via BetOnline)
The Grizzlies fired their Head Coach with just 9-games left in the regular season, something we’ve never seen before. Everyone was looking at Memphis, a team sitting at 44-29 and in the upper half of the Western Conference; scratching their heads as to what happened.
We may never know what exactly happened in Memphis, but usually in situations like this it’s more to do with clashing visions of what said team should look like; maybe even play like. One thing that’s stood out to me since Jenkins’ departure is Morant’s volume.
Morant’s averaging 28.4 PPG since his head coach was fired, taking 22.3 shot attempts per game and shooting 48% from the field. He’s even taking 8.3 3-point attempts per game, shooting 37% from beyond the arc and making just over 3 3s per game. Whether or not it had anything to do with Coach Jenkins, fact of the matter is Ja’s shooting more and scoring more points.
Win and you’re in. Look for the stars to shine brightest tonight.
Zach Edey D/Double (+190 via BetOnline)
This one’s a little bit spicier than the previous two. Edey’s seen a huge boost in playing time since Head Coach Tuomas Iisalo’s taken over. He’s played in 8 of the 9 games coached by Iisalo, averaging 27.8 MPG; a significant jump from the 20 MPG he saw under Coach Jenkins.
Edey’s rewarded the interim Head Coach with 9.3 PPG, 13.4 RPG, and 1.8 BPG; additionally attacking the offensive glass for 3.6 ORPG.
Edey’s played the Warriors 4 times this year, recording 1 double/double and flirting with one in 2 of the other 3 games. Averaging 9.3 PPG and 9.8 RPG against the Dubs in his rookie season and recording 10 points and 16 rebounds in their most recent matchup; this being under their new head coach.
