The National Basketball Association has a massive 14-game schedule planned for Friday, Jan. 5, including a 10 p.m. ET clash on ESPN between the Memphis Grizzlies (11-23) and Los Angeles Lakers (17-18) at crypto.com Arena.

The Grizzlies begin a three-game road trip tonight after falling 116-111 to the Toronto Raptors on Wednesday. Meanwhile, the Lakers hope to avoid a fourth straight loss after failing to get much going in a 110-96 defeat at the hands of the Miami Heat two nights ago.

With both sides desperately needing a victory, time will tell who emerges victorious once the smoke clears. There are also betting opportunities that you won’t want to miss out on, so let’s dive into my Grizzlies vs Lakers predictions and best bets.

Grizzlies vs Lakers Prediction & Pick (1/5)

A lot of NBA enthusiasts assumed that the Grizzlies were going to turn things around upon Ja Morant’s return from a 25-game suspension. That looked to be the case when Memphis won four straight games with Morant in the lineup, however, things have quickly changed since then.

The Grizzlies are now 1-4 SU in their last five games, which includes a 1-3 SU record in contests featuring their superstar point guard. What’s even more concerning is that three of Memphis’ last four losses came by double-digit margins, including a pair of 30-point defeats.

Unfortunately, the Grizzlies also suffered a massive blowout loss the last time that they faced the Lakers on Nov. 14, falling 134-107 at crypto.com Arena. Even though Morant wasn’t present in the defeat, it’s worth noting that Taylor Jenkins’ team has now lost four of their last five meetings with Los Angeles, leaving time to tell if tonight’s result will be any different.

Grizzlies vs Lakers prediction Anthony Davis and the Lakers aim to win their second straight game against the Grizzlies this season.

The Lakers are far from perfect — proven by a 2-8 SU record in their last 10 games — but they do have some things going for them.

For example, the Lakers have found a lot of success at crypto.com Arena thus far, winning 11 of their first 16 home games. Los Angeles’ home offense does leave something to be desired (113.3 PPG, 8th-worst), however, the team does allow the eighth-fewest points on the fourth-worst shooting percentage while tallying the second-most defensive rebounds and sixth-most steals at home.

If the Lakers’ strong defensive play continues tonight, the Grizzlies could be in trouble. After all, Memphis ranks dead-last when it comes to points per game as well as both field-goal and three-point percentages.

Additionally, the Grizzlies are just 5-17 SU as the underdogs this season, whereas the Lakers are 10-3 SU as the favorite at home.

In a game between two teams who desperately need the win, I’m taking the Lakers to stand tall at home. The Grizzlies have been putrid on the road and it’s clear that Morant’s presence alone isn’t enough to lift them out of the NBA’s cellar. With Los Angeles playing rock-solid defense at crypto.com Arena, I could see Memphis having issues keeping this one close if its shooters aren’t ready.

With that in mind, let’s also take the home team to cover the 4-point spread. Although the Lakers haven’t consistently covered the spread this season, they have the pleasure of facing the Grizzlies, who are not only 0-5 ATS in their last five games, but also 0-6 ATS with a minus-17.2 average scoring margin in their last six road games against Los Angeles.

After defeating the Grizzlies by 17 points at home just under two months ago, the Lakers have no excuse not to cover the spread tonight.

Best Grizzlies vs Lakers NBA Player Prop (1/5)

Let’s hop over to Bovada for the best Grizzlies vs. Lakers player prop, which happens to be the Over on Ja Morant’s 26.5-point total.

Morant has been solid since returning from suspension, averaging 25.6 points on 47.7% shooting through eight games. He’s finished with the Over on this prop in 50% of his outings so far, which includes Tuesday’s 28-point effort against the Raptors. Furthermore, the 24-year-old PG finished with the Over in each of his six of his last 12 games against the Lakers, averaging 27.5 PPG during that span.

With Los Angeles allowing the 13th-most points to point guards this season, I like Morant’s odds of having another strong output.
