There’s no question about it: the Clippers were absolutely outclassed in Game 5. Despite only trailing by one after the first quarter, Tyron Lue’s team couldn’t keep the game close as the Mavericks outscored them by at least nine points in each of the three remaining frames.
Inefficient shooting was one of the Clippers’ biggest issues in the last matchup. After all, LA only scored 93 points while shooting 37.9% from the floor and 25.7% from deep while being outscored 56-46 in the paint. James Harden and Paul George failed to step up in Kawhi Leonard’s absence as the duo only combined for 22 points on 6-of-25 shooting (24.0%).
The Clippers were able to contain Kyrie Irving, but they didn’t have an answer for Luka Doncic. The Slovenian superstar is now averaging 30.2 PTS/9.2 REB/8.8 AST in this series.
Unfortunately for LA, it’s already been confirmed that Leonard won’t be suiting up tonight due to his lingering knee injury. Additionally, Terance Mann is questionable with a leg contusion.
Kawhi Leonard (knee) has been ruled out for Game 6. Can the Clippers survive without him?
The Mavericks, meanwhile, will continue to be without both Tim Hardaway Jr. (ankle) and Olivier-Maxence Prosper (ankle). Dallas has survived the duo’s absence thus far, so look for Jason Kidd’s team to continue surviving without them.
I do see the Mavericks closing out this series tonight, though. The Clippers simply can’t rely on George and Harden, who are both volatile and unpredictable, to keep their playoff dreams alive. Meanwhile, Doncic and Irving have done a better job at stepping up for the Mavericks and I see the duo having another solid night in front of a raucous Dallas crowd.
And after winning Game 5 by 30 points, I’m taking the Mavs to cover as 8-point favorites. Dalla is 13-5 ATS in its last 18 games, whereas LA is 2-6 ATS in its last eight. The Clippers also tend to struggle to keep things close as the postseason goes on, proven by their 2-5 ATS record in their last seven outings in May.
Assuming the Mavericks pick up from where they left off, we could have another blowout on our hands.
