Spotlight on Trackhouse Duo in Mexico City
When SVG made the move from Australia’s Supercars series to NASCAR, it seemed obvious that it might take some time for him to acclimate to primarily racing on ovals and that some patience would be required, even if he is older than many NASCAR newbies are.
That makes the recent rumors about his future at Trackhouse Racing seem strange, even if he is 33rd in the points standings and his lone top-ten finish in the first 15 races this season was at Circuit of the Americas.
But after finishing 29th or worse in seven of the first ten oval races this season, SVG has finished in the top 20 three times in the last four races.
This weekend is a welcome respite for SVG, as it marks a return to road courses. And he delivered in Viva Mexico 250 qualifying, edging out Ryan Preece and Ross Chastain for pole.
Yesterday was also a positive day for Trackhouse teammate Daniel Suarez. In addition to winning the Xfinity Series race and thrilling his home crowd, he qualified tenth for today’s race. It was just the third time this season that he qualified tenth or better, and with the speculation about SVG also surrounding Suarez, who is 28th in the points standings.
Viva Mexico 250 odds have SVG as a clear favorite, with Suarez also expected to contend for his first Cup Series win since the Atlanta race in February of last year.
This week’s Cup Series starting lineup will be without last weekend’s winner, Denny Hamlin, who will miss the race following the birth of his son.

Kyle Larson to finish in the top five (+165 at Bovada)
Larson had a solid run in qualifying and will start fifth, and he will parlay that into his tenth top-five finish of the season. These odds are a steal.
Daniel Suarez to finish in the top ten (-120 at Bovada)
These odds are also a steal, as the same option is -225 at BetOnline. Suarez has had his ups and downs this season, but he delivered yesterday and will do so again today. Some things are just destined to be.
William Byron to finish in the top ten (-105 at BetOnline)
Byron only qualified 27th, but he is certainly adept on road courses and should find his way close to the front by the end. In fact, it would only be fitting if this was the race he won.
Since being in the right place at the right time in the Daytona 500, Byron has three runner-up finishes (Circuit of the Americas, Darlington, and Charlotte) and led a combined 624 laps at Darlington, Charlotte, and Michigan, only to come up empty-handed in all three races. It would only make sense for him to somehow end up winning a race in which he started 27th.
Chris Buescher to finish in the top ten (-110 at BetOnline and Bovada)
Buescher, who will start sixth, is not known as one of NASCAR’s road course aces, but he has become one of the best betting options for road races over the last few seasons. In his last 19 races on road courses, Buescher has finished in the top ten 15 times, including a seventh-place finish at Circuit of the Americas earlier this season.
Does this represent the best pick on the board for the Viva Mexico 250? With those percentages, it’s hard to argue against that being the case.
