The Main event of UFC Qatar is a very interesting match up of contrasting styles. Grapple heavy Arman Tsarukyen will be taking on exciting striker Dan Hooker in a 5 round main event.
The prospect Tsarukyan may be trying to get back in the UFC’s good graces in this bout. The last time he was scheduled for a main event, was for the light weight belt where he was forced to pull out 1-2 days before weigh ins, forcing the UFC to scramble for an opponent.
Even at yesterdays ceremonial weigh ins, Tsarukyan headbutted Hooker as the 2 faced off for the final time which could have put the bout in jeopardy. In a slew of poor business practices, there is no doubt in my mind the UFC is growing a tad impatient with his antics.
Despite the unprofessionalism, Tsarukyan’s skills in the octagon are not to be doubted. He is currently on a 4 fight win streak, with wins over some of the biggest names in the division on his resume.
Will Arman Continue His Winning Ways?
Early in his career he developed a wrestling base, becoming a very high level grappler in multiple regards. During that span he has racked up a very impressive takedown % and even more impressive control time average.
As his career has gone on he has developed top notch striking skills. Often throwing with big power punches, he has secured 4 knock out victories in his time with the UFC.
The last KO victory for him came over Beneil Dariush in 2023. It took Tsarukyan just 1 minute to finish the fight, looking career best in the striking.
Over the course of his career he has fallen in love with his hands rather his BJJ skills. It must be said that he does have 5 submission wins early in his career.
I believe in this fight, his ground game will shine thru and pave the way to a win. While saying that, I do believe the grappling will chew up a lot of the clock.
Will Hookers Takedown Defense Hold Up?
Lightweight Legend Dan Hooker Returns
Dan Hooker is coming into this fight after a long year lay off due to a broken hand. In his last bout, he gained a lot of hype and momentum by upsetting Mateus Gamrot in a close decision win at UFC 305.
A legend of the UFC at this point, Hooker has cemented himself as a veteran with his exciting bouts. Hooker has been a part of some of the most legendary fights in light weight history in his tenure.
A tenure that started way back in 2014 and has spanned the course of 22 fights. In that span he has gone 14-8, never getting the chance at a title shot.
One of the biggest benefits of this bout, is the winner will most likely be awarded that ever so elusive title shot. An added motivation for the Australian striker.
Over the course of his career he has a reputation for being one of the most durable fighters in the UFC. In some bouts even fighting thru broken limbs to secure the victory.
There is no doubt Hooker is able to absorb a massive amount of damage and keep fighting. The Aussie actually finds more success in brawl style fights, the rock em sock em robots style.
Tsarukyan will most likely not allow that type of fight due to the wrestling so Hooker may struggle to find success in this match up. I believe his durability will be his best asset, and every round starts on the feet so he will always have the punchers chance.
In a grapple heavy match up, I trust Hooker to be feisty enough on the ground to extend this bout into the later rounds.
