The Second Installment To The Highly Skilled Match Up Kicks Off Tonight
The Main Event at UFC 320 features an immediate rematch in the Light heavyweight division. MMA fans across the globe saw Magomed Ankalaev defeat Alex Pereira via Unanimous Decision at UFC 313 to claim the 205 lb championship.
Going into the match up Pereira was red hot riding a 5 fight winning streak with 4 finish wins. It came to a screeching halt when he ran into Ankalaev at UFC 313.
In the bout Alex was unable to get his game going, just circling and firing leg kicks to Ankalaev. He seemed to have trouble throwing his hands or was afraid of the power coming back at him.
As the match went on Alex did find some success defending takedowns but was ultimately being out struck on the feet. MMA fans felt as if Alex Pereira looked off, possibly injured because of his lack of volume on the feet.
Will Pereira Be 100% For The Rematch?
I tend to agree with the injury theory as Alex was one of the more active champions the UFC has seen. It is very possible Pereira took the fight to soon and was not fully healed from previous injuries.
Now being 38 years old, Pereira’s championship window is closing fast. The fight miles he has under his belt far exceed the true age of Alex.
Before switching over to MMA full time, Pereira was one of the more decorated Kick Boxers of all time. In professional Kickboxing he racked up over 40 fights, while having an additional 15 fights in MMA.
That is a very long career thus far, with many punches absorbed along the way. With knock out losses on his record as well, it is only a matter of time before father time starts to catch up to him.
Ankalaev Shown With A Big Smile After Claiming The LHW Title At UFC 313
Magomed Ankalaev flexed all of his skills in the first match up with Pereira. Showing great versatility he racked up clinch time, shot 13 takedowns although unsuccessful & out struck Pereira by over 30 strikes.
The aggressive style Ankalaev brought to the fight made Pereira look very uncomfortable at times. Ankalaev threw with volume and constantly flashed take down feints turning them into striking exchanges.
No one has been able to nullify Pereira’s power in the fashion that Ankalaev did. The biggest take away for me was, he didn’t just wrestle his way to a win.
The Russian prospect actually looked like the better striker in the match up. Proving that some fans may have underestimated his striking ability.
Will Ankalaev Make a Statement At UFC 320?
Pereira will be more aggressive in this match up due to the low volume in the first. I believe this could backfire majorly and actually play into Ankalaevs skillset.
While granting the immediate rematch to Pereira, he looks to make his first title defense. Ankalaev has been oozing with confidence all fight week seemingly very sure he will get the job done again.
Surrounded by a great coaching staff and making improvements in every fight. I expect Ankalaev’s team to create a great game plan based on the success of the first fight.
In this rematch I expect Ankalaev to make a statement on his first win and leave no doubt about who the real king of 205 lbs is.
