Taking the loss in the match up, Lopes went on to rip off 5 wins in a row & shoot up the featherweight rankings. In his title opportunity he took all the momentum into the match up but it ultimately was not enough to knock off featherweight goat Volkonovski.
Lopes has become somewhat of a striker in his time with the UFC, flashing big power in his hands and an aggressive push forward style. A stark contrast to what he came into the UFC as, which is a highly skilled & decorated BJJ artist.
The debut of Lopes in the UFC came later in his career then usual. When he was coming up on the regional scene he was known for his slick submissions & relentless grappling pace.
BJJ has been a major focus of Diego Lopes entire life. He comes from a long line of decorated BJJ artists, with his father being the rare “coral belt”.
Im not exactly sure why he has abandoned this style and fell in love with his hands but it has shown his weakness’s. In striking exchanges he is a little to willing to be hit, keeping his head on the center line while throwing big punches.
In a match up with such a skilled & powerful striker like Jean Silva, that could prove deadly.

Jean Silva has also made quite the splash in the featherweight division since joining the UFC in 2024. The prospect has gone 5-0 with all 5 ending inside the distance in impressive fashion.
Defeating top level UFC competition along the way and collecting 5 wins in 1 calendar year, a rare feat in the UFC. Silva has impressed UFC brass enough to give him his first main event, and a title shot with a win.
The gym he has called home in his career is The Fighting Nerds gym in Brazil. One of the best gyms in the world with many top level UFC prospects, he has contributed to the hype surrounding the gym.
Additionally, he gets some of the best looks in training MMA has to offer with the skill level at that gym. Well coached with a high fight IQ has only contributed to his success in the UFC.
Silva is predominantly a striker, being very technical and often taking his time to pick his shots. The power in his hands is next level and it seems as if when he touches people they just react differently then normal.
Almost as if they have never been hit with something of that nature. In boxing exchanges Silva does a great job of mixing up his attacks to the legs, head, and body often having fun and taunting the whole time.
In his fight against Bryce Mitchell he showed his versatility, mixing his attacks to while putting heavy damage on Mitchell which opened the opportunity for an impressive submission finish. There is a wrinkle in his game that he has not been able to show yet in the UFC.
Will Silva Mix Up His Gameplan?
The grappling can be a huge part of his game with his skills in that area. The wrestling side of his game is top notch as well despite barely being able to show it within the UFC.
Silva has great timing on his takedown entries, securing the takedown in each of his few attempts by blasting clean double legs & slick trips in grappling exchanges. Once on top, he has shown great control to advance position and not let his opponent back to his feet.
In my opinion this will be a huge factor in this match up with Lopes. If lopes is willing to accept bottom and throw up submission attempts Silva could take points on the judges scorecards just by staying out of trouble and keeping the control on top.
I expect Silva to utilize his grappling skills in this match up with Lopes. The striking exchanges between the two should open many opportunities.
If Silva can land the damage needed & control where the fight plays out. I expect him to grind out a win on the judges scorecards here to secure himself a title shot.
