Rockies vs. Mariners: When most fans glance at the Colorado Rockies, they see one of the worst records in baseball and move on. On paper, that judgment is fair. But if you have actually tuned in, you know this is a team that refuses to quit. Their pitching staff is a disaster, but their lineup is filled with hungry hitters battling for every at-bat. That grit has made them one of the more entertaining spoilers down the stretch. Tonight, they match up with Seattle, and I have my eye on one bat in particular who continues to shine despite Colorado’s lost season.

A team I have somehow fallen in love with for no logical reason is the Colorado Rockies. Their record screams one of the worst teams ever assembled in MLB history, and anyone who says that would be 100% correct. Yet if you have actually watched them play, you know this team is fun. Offensively, they have life. Pitching-wise, they should be sent to Mars. Still, this lineup is gritty, packed with guys fighting to prove they belong in the majors.
Tonight, I could not care less about the Mariners trying to stretch their lead in the AL West. I want the scrappy group most likely to play spoiler the rest of the way. The hitter I am locked on is Hunter Goodman. Odds are not out yet since the starters are not confirmed, but I want to be all over his bases prop. I sprinkled on his home run at better than five-to-one because he is in a strong spot to extend the little hot streak he has been riding.
Goodman enters with an elite rating on Batters-Box, cashing his bases prop in seven of his last eight elite-rated road games. Over the last week, the Rockies catcher is hitting .320 with a .440 slugging percentage and .810 OPS. He went 0-for-4 on Sunday, but after a rest day, he should be locked in against potential starter, Bryce Miller.
Goodman vs. Miller
Miller enters with a poor Batters-Box rating and has been crushed lately. He has allowed 47% hard contact this season, and right-handed bats have been torching him. The last 30 righties he faced produced over 70% hard contact and a 12% barrel rate, with a .383 xBA, .680 xSLG, and .329 xwOBA. At home, right-handed hitters are batting .284 with a .494 slugging percentage and .359 wOBA against him.
To make matters worse, 100% of Miller’s arsenal grades below league average. He throws his fastball nearly 40% of the time, yet not one of his pitches rates above 0.00 on FanGraphs. Goodman, meanwhile, has positive numbers against every pitch in Miller’s mix.
The Rockies are not chasing October, but that makes them dangerous. They have nothing to lose, and players like Hunter Goodman are using every at-bat to prove they belong. Seattle is fighting for playoff position, yet this feels like a perfect spoiler spot for Colorado’s young bats. Miller’s struggles against right-handed hitters line up too well with Goodman’s recent surge for me to ignore. I will ride with the Rockies catcher to keep delivering at the plate. Whether it is total bases or the long shot on his home run, Goodman is my play to close out the night.
