Rockies vs. Red Sox: After lighting up the scoreboard with 10 runs last night, the Red Sox enter tonight’s matchup with confidence and momentum. They now get an even softer target in Antonio Senzatela, a pitcher who has been shelled all season. With one of baseball’s hottest offenses facing one of its coldest arms, this shapes up as a textbook system play.

After putting up 10 runs on the Rockies last night, the Boston Red Sox look to keep their momentum rolling against the worst pitcher in baseball. I know what you are thinking—the Red Sox have shelled Colorado pitchers in back-to-back nights, and you are saying there are worse? Yes.
MLB System Play Wednesday
The system play is back. We get to fade the daylights out of Rockies starter Antonio Senzatela, who has arguably been the worst pitcher in baseball all season long. Owning a 6.57 ERA and 1.90 WHIP, the 30-year-old right-hander is allowing over seven hits, 2.16 extra-base hits, and 3.8 runs per start this season.
He enters today with the third-worst pitcher rating on Batters-Box’s current season ratings. On top of that, he grades poorly in matchup wOBA, ISO, hard contact, and strikeout percentage. So far this year, he is allowing over 46% hard contact. On the road, he sports a 6.32 ERA and a .380 opponent batting average. He is also giving up 7.75 hits and 3.5 runs per start away from home.
The Rockies veteran throws fastball 52% of the time, and it grades below league average per FanGraphs. The Red Sox have 10 hitters with a run value per 100 pitches above 0.0, per Baseball Savant.
Overall, the Red Sox have five elite-rated hitters today. Eight of them are above the league average ground ball rate, which could be a concern. However, Boston ranks eighth in runs per game and is averaging 2.68 runs at home. I believe they can carry the momentum from yesterday’s explosion into tonight’s matchup against the worst pitcher in baseball.
