Red Sox vs. Orioles:
The Boston Red Sox look to bounce back tonight after a tough loss on Sunday Night Baseball. They face an Orioles team that has improved in the second half, but Boston has the firepower to dominate early.
Tonight’s matchup features a struggling right-handed starter in Tomoyuki Sugano, who has been lucky against left-handed hitters this season. Advanced stats, splits, and first-five scoring trends all point toward Boston putting up runs quickly.
Let us break down why this is a perfect spot to back the Red Sox in the first five innings.

Same as the last write-up, we are backing another offense that should explode early and often on the road this evening. Coming off a loss on Sunday Night Baseball, the Boston Red Sox look to bounce back in Baltimore against an Orioles team that has been playing solid ball in the second half of the season. They are not pushing for a playoff berth like the Red Sox, but they are a much more respectable team than they were in June.
The Red Sox find themselves with a very favorable matchup tonight, which is why we are going to be all over their first-five team total over 2.5 runs at +105. That is a great price. It is always a lot more fun to sweat these first-five team totals when they are at plus money, especially because I usually find them mispriced in these spots. Paying juice for these props is far less appealing, and plus-money pricing offers a much better opportunity.
Red Sox Trends
Boston has the ninth-highest rated offense on the day, according to Batters-Box’s current season ratings. Their lineup features two elite-rated hitters, six above the league ground ball rate, and none with poor ratings or above-league strikeout rates.
The Red Sox have been very solid in the first five innings this season, averaging above 2.5 runs both at home and on the road. They have been exceptionally strong against right-handed pitchers on the road, ranking second overall in wRC+, wOBA, ISO, OPS, and walk rate. They are also sixth in hard-hit rate.
Over the last 60 plate appearances on the road, five Red Sox hitters have averages above .265. Six have wOBA above .289, OPS above .754, and OBP above .317.
Red Sox vs. Sugano
Tonight, they take on a familiar opponent, Orioles 35-year-old rookie Tomoyuki Sugano. The Red Sox faced him last Tuesday in Boston, where he shut down the offense, giving up just five hits and one run. This feels like a perfect spot for the Red Sox to get revenge and unleash frustration from last night’s loss.
Sugano has the fifth-worst pitcher rating on the day among starters, per Batters-Box. He owns poorly rated matchup metrics in ISO, hard contact, and strikeout percentage, allowing 37% hard contact this season.
At home this season, Sugano has a sub-4.00 ERA, giving up 5.58 hits and 2.5 runs per outing. Some might argue that he has performed better at home, but much of that came against mid-tier offenses like the Athletics and Rockies. The Red Sox offense is much stronger than the Athletics or Rockies.
Despite a 2.84 ERA over his last seven games, his expected ERA is 4.67 and xFIP is 4.39. Opposing hitters still post a .284 xBA, .457 xSLG, and .350 xwOBA. Sugano has been lucky.
Three of the top-rated Red Sox hitters tonight bat from the left side. Left-handed hitters have given the Orioles trouble all season. While Sugano has maintained a 2.93 ERA against the last 60 lefties, his xERA is 4.05. Opponents are still making 45.2% hard contact, with a 16.7% barrel rate and a .380 xBA. Regression is coming. Sugano cannot maintain this false dominance.
With all of this considered, this feels like a perfect spot to back the Red Sox on the road. Tonight, Sugano finally gets lit up. The numbers, splits, and trends all line up in Boston’s favor. This is a team capable of getting on top early and putting a game away in the first five innings. If the Red Sox execute, they can carry momentum from their road performance into the rest of the game and set the tone for another dominant offensive outing.
Expect fireworks from the left side of the plate and a Red Sox lineup firing on all cylinders.
Baltimore Weather
According to RotoGrinders, temperatures should be in the low 80s, with a slight breeze blowing out to right field. Conditions are ideal for left-handed hitters, giving them a potential boost. Overall, it looks like a very hitter-friendly evening, setting the stage for an offense-ready game.
