One of the hottest offenses in baseball takes on one of the worst-rated pitchers of the day in lovely Seattle. The Mariners’ first five team total is the play this evening, set at 2.5 and priced at a nice +120.
Lucas Giolito vs. Mariners
Seattle faces Red Sox starter Lucas Giolito, who holds the second-worst pitcher rating on Batters-Box’s default ratings. In the current season ratings, he ranks dead last, with poor marks in wOBA, ISO, hard contact, and strikeout percentage. According to FanGraphs, 97% of Giolito’s arsenal grades below league average.
Through eight starts, Giolito owns a 5.45 ERA and 1.54 WHIP. He is allowing an average of 3.12 runs, 5.8 hits, and 1.6 extra-base hits per outing. Opponents are batting .301 with a .355 OBP, .467 slugging percentage, and an .823 OPS against him.
The Mariners have been rolling. Over the last seven days, they rank seventh in offense, hitting .284 with a .369 OBP, .445 slugging, and a 138 wRC+. Over the last two weeks, they remain in the top-10. This is a lineup averaging 2.37 runs in the first five innings, facing a Red Sox team allowing 2.79 runs in that same span on the road.
At this price, this is a strong spot to back Seattle. Maybe Boston is still feeling the effects of the Rafael Devers trade, but either way, the Mariners should get to Giolito early.
