Phillies vs. Astros: Zack Wheeler has been nearly untouchable in June, and tonight he draws a road start against the surging Astros. Despite Houston’s recent hot streak, they have not faced an arm like Wheeler’s in weeks. We are targeting his strikeouts prop and laddering it with confidence.

Coming off a dominant performance against the Mets last Friday—five shutout innings, four hits allowed—Zack Wheeler looks to stay hot in Houston. The Astros have been playing well in June, but this is a different test. Wheeler has been locked in, and tonight, we are targeting his strikeouts prop.
Through three starts this month, the Phillies ace owns a 1.06 ERA, has allowed just three runs on 11 hits, struck out 24, and walked four over 17.0 innings pitched. He is in another gear right now, and we are taking the over on his strikeouts prop set at 6.5 (-140).
Zack Wheeler Trends
Wheeler holds the fourth-best pitcher rating of the day, according to Batters-Box. When given an elite rating, he delivers. In 23 such starts over the past three seasons, he has gone over 6.5 strikeouts 73% of the time, recorded 8+ in 47%, and 9+ in 30%. When he has an elite strikeout matchup, those numbers rise to 78%, 63%, and 41%, respectively. On the road, in elite strikeout spots, he clears those same marks 81%, 63%, and 27% of the time (in 11 starts). It is not a massive sample, but for pitchers, double digits is noteworthy.
This season, Wheeler averages 7.4 strikeouts per game on the road with a 2.86 ERA and a .201 opponent batting average.
The Astros are playing solid baseball, but they have feasted on bad teams this month—Pirates, Guardians, White Sox, Twins, Athletics, and Angels. In June, they are slashing .259/.322/.418 with a .740 OPS. However, their plate discipline remains average. Over the past seven days, they rank 10th-worst in strikeout rate; over the past 14, they are 12th-worst—hovering between 22% and 24%.
The best arm they have faced in June is Paul Skenes. He went eight innings, allowed one run on three hits, and struck out eight. The rest of their opponents have been mediocre at best. Skenes is the real deal—and so is Wheeler, one of the most consistent arms in the league.
That is why I have Wheeler’s strikeouts laddered up to 11 tonight.
