Nationals @ Diamondbacks Analysis & Breakdown
Corbin Carroll hit his 8th HR of the season in walk-off fashion last night.
The Diamondbacks and Nationals had an insane game yesterday. The two teams scored 17 combined runs with 3 total home runs in the game. The Nationals began the game on fire, scoring 5 runs in the top of the 1st inning.
Washington held an 8-2 lead after 6 innings and still held an 4 run lead going into the bottom of the 9th inning; that’s where everything came apart for the Nats.
The Nationals brought in right handed closer Kyle Finnegan, he allowed 5 hits, 5 earned runs and 2 home runs; both 2-run missiles.
Corbin Carroll walked it off with his 8th home run of the year, his biggest of the 2024 season. The Diamondbacks won in walk-off fashion and look to keep the momentum rolling tonight for Game 2.
Arizona’s won 4 of their L5 games and with just a half game separating them and Atlanta for top spot in the Wild Card, every game means that much more.

It’s Patrick Corbin Day and ya’ll know that’s my favorite baseball holiday in the world, outside of maybe Austin Gomber Day.
All jokes aside, Patrick Corbin has a 5.26 ERA this season but he’s been a little bit better over his last few games. He’s got a 4.30 ERA in July and he’s given up just 1 home run across 4 starts this month.
He’s due for some regression, and the balls bound to get away from him sometime soon here. Ketel Marte has been on fire this year, batting 0.299 on the year with 24 home runs (0.543 SLG) and 71 RBI.
Marte’s pumped those numbers up 0.337 with a 0.578 SLG (11 HR) when playing at Chase Field and as he showed last night, he’s got no plans on slowing down.
Last night Marte went 3/5 at the plate with a home run and 3 RBI.You might think he’s due for a bit of regression, but here’s why I think otherwise.
Marte’s batting 0.333 against the Nats this year, with 2 home runs and 6 RBI across just 4 matchups. He also happens to be batting 0.351 in July with 7 home runs and a 0.636 SLG since the beginning of June.
Lastly, just over a week ago, we saw Marte go 3 consecutive days with a home run against the Royals at Kauffman Stadium. No reason he can’t go back to back here.

Arizona currently has 9 batters batting above 0.260 against lefties this year and their lineup is stacked with big right handed bats. Corbin has allowed righties to hit 0.295 this year with 13 of his 15 home runs allowed coming to right handed bats.
Corbin’s also giving up a 36.6% hard contact rate with just a 7% walk rate. What that tells me is he gives up big hits, and he’s hopefully gonna keep the ball over top of the plate. Even if he doesn’t I love the Diamondbacks to get on base and score plenty of runs today.
