Judge and Ohtani Headed for Historic Repeat Sweep
After making the leap from the American League to the National League, Ohtani became the first player in MLB history to record a 50-50 season last year, as he hit 54 home runs and stole 59 bases in 159 games.
His extraordinary exploits saw him become the first player to claim MVP honors in consecutive years in different leagues, as well as joining the late Frank Robinson as the only players to be named MVP in both the American League and National League.
Among other accolades, he also became the first player to unanimously win back-to-back MVPs, and he became just one of a dozen players to be named MVP three or more times.
The one thing that Ohtani did not do was lead the majors in home runs. That honor belonged to Aaron Judge, who clobbered 58 homers to top the charts for the second time in three seasons on the way to a unanimous American League MVP win.
If both players can remain healthy, it looks likely that neither MLB MVP award will change hands in 2025.
With so much of the season left, a lot can happen. But Judge is on pace to challenge for a second 60-homer season and a potential Triple Crown. If his blistering batting average holds, he could become just the fifth AL hitter post-World War II to post a batting average of .370 or better.
Ohtani, meanwhile, may also push for 60 homers, and his return to the mound could bolster his MVP candidacy.
Since the Baseball Writers’ Association of America began awarding MLB MVP honors in 1931, there has not been a repeat winner in both the AL and NL in consecutive seasons. Ohtani and Judge are well on their way to changing that, and the odds reflect that possibility.

AL MVP Odds
Were it not for an injury-riddled 2023 season, Judge would be making a run at a fourth consecutive 50-homer season. As it is, three in four seasons would be an outstanding achievement in this era, and if the injury bug stays away, he will clear that bar with some room to spare this season.
His only current competition (if you could call it that) for AL MVP honors also appears to be his only competition for the AL home run title. Raleigh set career highs with 34 homers and 100 RBI last season, but he has already surpassed the former number and is on pace to outpace the latter number by some distance.
Can anyone else get in the mix? Witt and Henderson were preseason favorites, but both of their teams have struggled this season, and their individual numbers are off the pace as well.
NL MVP Odds
Ohtani is not out of sight in the NL MVP race, but if he continues to hit at a high level, it’s hard to see anyone muscling in front of him, especially now that he has made a return to the mound.
