Mets @ Rockies Analysis & Breakdown

The Mets sit just 1.5 games back of a Wild Card spot and could very well make the post-season. They’re coming off a 6-0 win against the Cardinals and are taking their first trip to Coors Field of the season

New York will be starting right handed pitcher, Luis Severino tonight. Opposing him will be Kyle Freeland for the Colorado Rockies.

Strangely enough, Freeland sports a 1.88 ERA at home, going 1-0 through 4 starts at Coors. With the way the ball flies inside that stadium, it’s a big surprise to see such a big difference in his home and away splits.

Severino on the other hand has been great for the Mets this season. After going 4-8 with the Yankees last season and finishing with a 6.65 ERA, he’s rebounded this season going 7-4 and posting a 3.93 ERA.

He’s hit a bit of a slump in July, going 2-3 with a 5.81 ERA and giving up 5 home runs in just 5 games. With the conditions the way they are today, I’m expecting plenty of offense and tough day for both starting pitchers.

One of the Mets’ biggest additions this off-season was J.D. Martinez. The big bat of Martinez came over from the Dodgers in the off-season and has had his fare share of ups and downs this year.

He’s played in 82 games this year and he’s posted a 0.262 batting average with 12 home runs (0.444 SLG) and 52 RBI. He’s batting 3rd in this Met’s lineup, and 4th in RBIs for this team, despite playing nearly 25-30 games fewer than the top 3.

Martinez has been much better this year against left handed pitching, recording a 0.280 batting average and 0.476 SLG. He’s played the Rockies 3 times this year and has yet to record even a hit.

J.D. went 0/9 with 6 strikeouts, when these two teams met in New York. He’s incredibly due and Coors Field is a park he has thrived inside. Martinez has a career batting average of 0.421 at Coors Field, recording 32 hits, 7 home runs and 22 RBIs in just 17 games.

Today he gets the lefty Kyle Freeland who is incredibly due for a poor start at home. He’s got a 5.64 ERA and giving up 11.29 hits/9 innings and 1.37 home runs/9 innings. Freeland’s allowing righties to hit 0.306 with all 9 of his home runs allowed coming against righties.

This over is high but with the pitchers we have on the mound, and the weather conditions today at Coors, it’s tough not to love the over in this spot.

Mets’ starting pitcher Luis Severino has been good this year, but he’s kind of come unravelled here in July. He finished the month with a 5.81 ERA, going 2-2 through 5 starts and giving up 5 home runs in that span.

Severino also gave up 28 hits, 17 runs, and 12 walks in the same time frame. Today he makes his first ever career start at Coors and we know how tough that can be for a pitcher.

The Rockies are coming home after a 10-game road trip that saw them leave Denver on July 25th. Colorado scored 20 runs in their last home game and average 4.9 runs/game at home versus 3.7 runs/game on the road.

On the other side, the Mets lineup is stacked with powerful right handed bats and are batting 0.261 as a team (T-6th) against left handed pitchers. New York’s also got 3 batters with elite matchups according to batters-box.com, with Freeland giving up a 38% hard contact rate.
