Houston Astros vs Chicago White Sox: MLB Best Bets

Can the Astros take down the White Sox on the road?

The Houston Astros are in the Windy City this weekend facing off against the Chicago White Sox at Rate Field. This will be Game 1 of a three game series this weekend, with these teams only playing one other time this season in Houston next month.

Houston is two games behind the Mariners for first place in the AL West, currently tied with the Athletics for second place. They are coming off a home loss to Detroit but were able to take the first two of that series after losing two of three to the Royals on the road. The Astros are only 5-7 away from home this season, but they face an easy pitcher tonight.

As for the White Sox, they are well below the rest of the pack in the AL Central, sitting 11.5 games behind the Tigers in first, and 4.5 games behind the fourth place Twins. There is plenty of work to be done for the White Sox, but will they rally against the Astros at home tonight? They just beat Milwaukee 8-0 yesterday, surely they can keep that going for one more game.

While it’s scary to back the White Sox bats, I’ll be doing so in some capacity this evening. I don’t have much trust in either offense to be quite honest with you, but this a great spot to fade both starting pitchers as they continue to find their groove this season. Get in and get out with this first five total.

Let me tell you why I’m fading both of these pitchers. For starters, they both have ERAs north of 4.00, which is not a good sign early in the season. Valdez has allowed 11 earned runs in his last three starts for a 5.50 ERA and a WHIP of 1.44 in that stretch. He doesn’t mix it up too much, throwing three pitches over 95% of the time. Half the time, you’re getting his sinker, which is clearly his best pitch. However, his curveball and change up are below league average this year, giving breaking ball hitters significant upside. Valdez is allowing a hard contact percentage of 46.1%, his worst since 2020, 3% above his career average, and 10% above the league average this year.

Jonathan Cannon hasn’t been much better. He’s allowed 3+ earned runs in four of his last five outings, posting an ERA of 5.33 and a 1.44 WHIP. Cannon has allowed home runs in each of those four games as well, although one could argue he is simply more comfortable at home. In two starts he hasn’t allowed a run in 9.1 innings, but he still has a 1.32 WHIP. It’s about time he gets blown up at Rate Field. Cannon switches up his pitches more than Valdez, but three of them are below league average, and the other two aren’t anything special.

The best way to fade both pitchers in this game is to take the first five over, which I’ll be riding this evening.
