Dodgers vs. Rockies: The week opens in Denver with the Dodgers taking on the Rockies in a four-game set. Colorado has been more competitive over the last month, showing fight despite ongoing struggles with its rotation. Los Angeles enters fresh off a sweep of the Padres that vaulted them back into first place in the NL West. Now the Dodgers look to carry that momentum into Coors Field, one of the most hitter-friendly ballparks in baseball.

Happy Monday and welcome into another great week of baseball. Today we head to Denver, where the Rockies host the Dodgers in a four-game series. Colorado is coming off splitting a four-game set against the Diamondbacks this past weekend, while Los Angeles just swept the Padres to reclaim first place in the NL West.
This evening, the Rockies send veteran left-hander Kyle Freeland to the mound. The 32-year-old has had his share of ups and downs this season, as most Rockies pitchers have, with the team allowing the most runs in the first five innings of any club. At home, the numbers are staggering. Colorado is giving up over 4.5 runs in the first five innings at Coors Field. For comparison, the Athletics are second-worst at just 3.25.
That is one of the reasons we are locked in on the Dodgers first five team total over 3.5 at even money. Los Angeles enters tonight looking to carry momentum against one of the worst rotations in baseball.
On the season, the Dodgers rank sixth in first five scoring, averaging 2.79 runs. On the road, they put up 2.39, but that does not concern me at Coors Field, one of the most hitter-friendly parks in the game.
Per Batters-Box, Los Angeles owns the highest rated offense on the slate today. Their lineup includes three elite-rated hitters, one hitter above the strikeout rate, and five above the ground ball rate. Over the last four weeks against left-handed pitching, the Dodgers rank eighth in wRC+, ninth in wOBA, and tenth in OPS.
Dodgers vs. Freeland
Freeland, meanwhile, carries the worst rating on the day. His marks in matchup wOBA, ISO, hard contact, and strikeout percentage are all poor, and this season he has allowed nearly 45% hard contact.
In his last five starts at home, Freeland has posted a 5.60 ERA, 5.61 xERA, 5.11 xFIP, and a near 40% hard-hit rate. Opposing hitters during that stretch own a .274 xBA, .486 xSLG, and .380 xwOBA.
Five of the Dodgers’ six top-rated hitters tonight will bat from the right side. Right-handed bats have crushed him lately. The last 90 righties to face Freeland own a .411 xBA, .742 xSLG, and .448 xwOBA. In that span, he has a 5.14 ERA, 8.36 xERA, 5.02 xFIP, and a 47.8% hard-hit rate.
All the numbers point toward more struggles ahead for Freeland, and with more Dodgers bats waking up—yes, that means you, Mookie Betts—this lineup is primed to feast again.
Asking for four runs at Coors Field, at even money, is the perfect price in my opinion. Typically, books make you pay juice for this type of number in Denver, especially when it involves the Dodgers, but not tonight. With Freeland’s splits, the Dodgers’ lineup construction, and the hitter-friendly environment, this number is more than fair. Do not fear the four, because the Dodgers are fully capable of clearing it early.
