Will Skubal Spin His Way to a Second Straight Cy Young?

Last season, the Detroit Tigers made the MLB playoffs for the first time since 2014. A big reason for their return to the postseason was their pitching staff, led by ace and AL Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal.

With an 18-4 record, a 2.39 ERA, and 228 strikeouts in 192 innings, Skubal led the majors in wins and strikeouts. He became the first AL pitching Triple Crown winner since Shane Bieber in 2020 (and the first in a full season since 2011).

Skubal swept all 30 first-place votes in AL Cy Young Award voting, becoming the third straight unanimous winner in the AL.

Will Skubal repeat in 2025? There has not been a repeat AL Cy Young winner since 2000, when Pedro Martinez went back-to-back.

But as good as he was in 2024, he may be even better this season, and with the halfway point of the season approaching, he is already separated himself from the field of AL Cy Young hopefuls, according to oddsmakers.

That is even with the likes of Hunter Brown, Max Fried, Jacob deGrom, and Garrett Crochet off to strong starts and worthy of a few lines in the conversation as well.

Could there also be a repeat in the National League? Like Skubal, Atlanta’s Chris Sale won his league’s Triple Crown on the way to winning his first Cy Young last season. Sale is not atop the latest NL Cy Young odds, but he is one of the top contenders, though Pittsburgh’s Paul Skenes is well out in front of the field even with a losing record.

AL Cy Young Odds

Skubal entered this season as the AL Cy Young favorite, and he remains there.

The rest of the top-five contenders were all in the top-10 of BetOnline’s preseason Cy Young odds. Fried has made a smooth transition from the NL to the AL after making the move from the ATL to the Big Apple, and deGrom is healthy and thriving after making only 35 starts from 2021 to 2024 due to injury.

The biggest surprise contender is Kansas City’s Kris Bubic, who entered this season with a career record of 11-29 and was a reliever all of last season. Can he continue to pitch well for the remainder of the season?

NL Cy Young Odds

In Cy Young Award history, no starting pitcher in either league has won the award with a losing record. In fact, the lone pitcher to win with a losing record was former Dodgers closer Eric Gagne, who was 2-3 when he took home the 2003 NL Cy Young after converting all 55 of his save opportunities that season.

Will Skenes make Cy Young history this season? Thanks to woeful run support, wins have been hard to come by for the 2024 NL Rookie of the Year, who was 11-3 with a 1.96 ERA in his dazzling debut campaign.

Voters for major MLB awards tend to operate differently than voters for major awards in other sports, which is why deGrom has two Cy Youngs to his name despite having a combined record of 21-17 in those two seasons. So, even if Skenes’ record doesn’t creep over .500 at some point, his candidacy shouldn’t be affected if he continues to excel.
